    Intermediate Actions

The basic Mauser actions you will find are VZ24s and K98s. The VZs are something like 3/8" shorter than the K98 - fits the 8x57, but I have had trouble feeding .30-06 length cartridges through them. If I want to build a standard length cartridge rifle, then I use a "full-sized" Mauser. The...

    Twist rate + 458 Lott

Art Alphin spec'ed the .495 A-Square at 1:10. The higher the spin, the more momentum to remain stable/the more difficult it is to de-stabilize the bullet as it penetrates. He was convinced that the higher spin rate would get straighter penetration/less propensity to curve off the line of...

What makes a stock mitigate recoil better?

YES! LOP is very important - missed that one. The European stocks seem to drop at the comb and that accentuates perceived recoil.
  10. USMA84DAB

What makes a stock mitigate recoil better?

    1. Wide/large butt - look at a Mosin-Nagant for what NOT to do! 2. Comb is in line with the bore/not dropped, rounded and wide so it doesn't knife into the shooter's cheekbone 3. A grippable fore end 4. A more vertical pistol grip that can help to pull the stock back into the shoulder 5...

    9.3x57 to 9.3x62

I don't think it would be a problem but you need to check - does the barrel contour have enough steel to handle the reaming forward of the chamber? Since it wasn't a military rifle, probably should be OK, but better to check vs. have it blow up in your face.

    Help a guy out!

I think the current market for a sporterized '17 Enfield is $900-$1,000. However, very tough to evaluate it like this (online) - quality of work, condition of blueing, bore condition, etc., all can impact things significantly. Is the stock bedded? Pillars? Recoil pad hardened into a rock? To me...

    Help a guy out!

You could ASSUME it is .30-06, but that doesn't verify the prior owner(s) didn't have it re-bored to .35 Whelen, for example. Take a round of .30-06 and see it the bullet end fits into the muzzle - that would 98% mean it is .30-06 - only certain way is cerro-cast the chamber - a local gunsmith...

    Help a guy out!

So - likely the original barrel from OCT, 1919. If it had been re-barreled by the military, that would mean it had been ruined/worn out in a year or two - possible, but not likely. Or, could have been rebuilt after WWI with the barrel made in OCT19. You can google the serial number and see when...

    Help a guy out!

It has been re-stocked - therefore it is not original. You did not say if it is still in .30-06, or if it is a P14 and in .303 Brit. Does it have the military barrel? Chambered in .375H&H. You are not giving us much to work with.

    Powder Burning Rate Chart

I have caught manuals being wussified over the years too. The corporate lawyers are always trying to drive their company to be more safe, so they slow down the load/lower the powder charges. Another way to tell is see what Gordon's and QuickLoad say.

Leupold CDS setting recommendations for a .375 H&H

My 1-5x24 VX5 CDS dial got used twice in South Africa. Once I dialed to 200 when we checked a bait station and a troop of baboons ran off as we pulled up. The drop would have been 5" if I held manually. The 2nd time was 253 lasered by the PH, so I dialed 250 and held dead on the Blesbock...

    .458 win mag throating

I have had the same problem when I chambered .35 Whelen - the round nose bullets are too big at the tip/not spitzer-shaped, so they don't chamber - If you are inclined/skilled at tinkering, you can get a throating reamer from Brownells and fix this. Or, you could open it up to .458 Lott...

    35 Whelen or 300 Win??

The trajectory excuse/advantage of the 300 WINMAG is just a crutch for not being willing to learn to shoot. The .35W has a trajectory nearly identical to the .30-06. I have shot High power matches - with iron sights - at 200, 300 and 600 yards with M-1 Garands in .30-06. You just have to know...

    How much Ammo is “Enough”?

You can't have too much unless you're swimmin'. Between Y2K, the scamdemic, and ban scares every few years, it seems prudent to never stop stacking ammo. I have 600 cases of .495 A-Square I am up to about 800 cases for .375 Ruger since Hornady won't make cases available. If the ammo...

I have not hunted dangerous game. I have 20 years in the Army. I have not had the wallet to go above Leupold, and have not seen the need to as their stuff is very good. My sweet spot would to aim for the VX5HD 1-5x24 CDS with firedot duplex. I used it on plains game - sniped baboon at 425...

I suppose their last batch of brass was 95% held to load for ammo. In NOV of last year there was brass available for 3-4 days. Apparently that was all they wanted to release to reloads. Well, I can tell you I will NEVER buy another cartridge/flavor of the month!!!!! So how does THAT business model work for them?!??!?
