    Gunsmith Treasure Chest

Good things come in wood boxes. I made the box both to protect the jig while in storage and to keep all the tooling and parts together. Made using scrap wood and some hardware.

    Stepping Back In Time

RCBS 30-06 dies purchased in 1965, with the file type case trim die. And the RCBS A-2 Press. Trimming 30-06 cases the old fashioned way after sizing. And touching up with the L.E. Wilson tool for chamfering case mouths. Sometimes the old way is fun. (I have two rotary trimmers on the shelf)

    FedEx Rolled In This Morning

110 pounds of good old American Iron. Easily adaptable to my 14x40 Gear Head Jet. Everything works great, just got to figure out how to remove the 6 tool holders. I suspect 60 years of congealed lube after sitting on a shelf somewhere. Kroil is doing its thing now.

    Heaven Can Wait!

Yes, Heaven can wait! When we have M98 actions this nice to work with. Pulled both out of the vault today to test on the Wilson Rockwell Hardness Tester. Forgot just how nice they are! No silly bubba drilling and tapping or grinding on the rear bridges. The one on the right is barreled...

Out Of The Vault After 22 Years

This one has been silently aging in the vault since 1999. 5500 ft/lbs. Thought I would post some info for others to see before I head to the Happy hunting Grounds. It would be a shame for a gun dealer junky to find it and dispose of it with no history. The rifle was modified in my shop...

    The Slack Belt Grinder

I was polishing a barrel today in preparation for rust bluing. Thought some of you would be interested in the process. I built this handy lathe accessory many years ago. It has other uses: Below, fitting a barrel band front ramp. I grind the barrel a few thousandths under the ramp bore...

Installing that pesky barrel band sight ramp

I have installed about 10 barrel band front ramps in the past. Sort of a juggling job, as I always silver solder the ramp to the barrel. Alignment was by eye. Must be a better way to have the top surface parallel to the base of the action! So I pulled scrap from the junk boxes and went to...

Von Gruff Made Me Post This: Skinning Knives from Sawmill Blades

In the 1980's I was on a knife making kick and produced about 50, most were for gifts. I kept a few and have some blanks left plus about 500 pounds of band mill blades. Band mills are huge band saw type sawmills for milling big logs. The steel is called L 6 saw steel and makes a very nice...

A nice Lothar Walther 9.3 barrel arrived yesterday. Pre chambered for 9.3x62 and threaded for the M98 Mauser. Unfired! And complete with sights. Rear sight is installed but the front ramp has not been soldered yet. I desire to build a rifle in the classic style of the Pre WW II Mausers...
