Being Killed By Hyenas Would Be Gruesome, They Just Start Eating

J.A. Hunter wrote about hyenas sneaking into a camp at night, where bearers were sleeping on open ground, snipping off somebody's private parts and vanishing before the victim even had time to wake up. That would be some way to wake up. "what the......."

HELP NEEDED To Find Scott van Zyl Gone Missing In Zimbabwe

I can certainly appreciate the respect for Scott's family, but I think enough time has passed that someone can simply ask if the investigation produced anything. There's no need for arbitrary harshness, as if the slightest mention of the subject was forbidden.

Statement: Zimbabwe Professional Hunters and Guides Association (ZPHGA)

Interesting letter, and probably a necessary one. But I'm wondering, how exactly did the deaths of Scott and Theunis "bring this problem to the fore"?

    .458 Winchester vs. .458 Lott

I've personally never fired the Lott, but I've read several times that compared to the 458 WM, the recoil is really, really harsh. Just a data point.

HELP NEEDED To Find Scott van Zyl Gone Missing In Zimbabwe

It's so easy to armchair quarterback this, but for those of us who are statebound, there's little else for us to do besides donate money and speculate. It would be helpful to know the condition of his packs, for example. Had they been rummaged through? If not, that would probably rule out...

HELP NEEDED To Find Scott van Zyl Gone Missing In Zimbabwe

What was going on with the leopard? Were they hunting one with a client, tracking one that was wounded...? Just wondering.

HELP NEEDED To Find Scott van Zyl Gone Missing In Zimbabwe

Wish they could get hold of one of those military choppers with infrared. They can cruise around a couple thousand feet up with that scanner and anything alive will glow like a light bulb.

HELP NEEDED To Find Scott van Zyl Gone Missing In Zimbabwe

I've put some word out as well, hopefully it will bring in some more donations. Just asking speculatively... are there any specific dangers in that area that might be part of this, e.g. militant poachers or rebels, large lion prides, etc.? Did the tracker hear any gunshots? Prayers sent for...

What is the TRUE cost of my African Hunting Safari!

Wow. The more you read some of these posts, the more impossible an African hunting trip looks, unless you go on some little 5-day jaunt in a fenced concession and bag a couple of small antelope or a wart hog or something.

    Tanzania Hunting Abuses Video WARNING

Those guys look totally self-focused. Everything's about them and their pleasure. Reminds me of ISIS...... Seems like this might make an interesting thread over on the forum: "Accomodating Muslim clients."

Mark Sullivan shows us how to handle a Double Rifle

Ego aside, he appears to be fully aware of the ramifications of his hunting style. He says on his web page: "A word of caution. Do not attempt to mirror my technique and method unless you are willing to pay the ultimate price, because in order to do what I do, you must be willing to die. This...

Mark Sullivan shows us how to handle a Double Rifle

"I've seen Sullivan BS on video with the client while a buffalo is crawling on two legs for a few minutes with a severed spine. If Sullivan can tolerate an animal suffering like that and have a chat with a client, he is a psychopath. Zero empathy for the animal. Zero respect." I admit, I would...

Mark Sullivan shows us how to handle a Double Rifle

"I must always laugh, when I see the headlines in a forum " I hunted black death " Its nonsene. Our wild boars at home attack much quicker." Never been to Africa, but killed my share of boars. They're pretty easy to put down, and don't weigh 2,000 pounds. J.A. Hunter told of a buff's heart...

Silliest thing you've seen a client bring along?

I've heard many stories about some extravagant or nonsensical item some client just HAD to bring on a safari. A feather mattress. A portable putting green. A violin (had to stay in practice, you know...). 100 year old wines. Ironing board (must'nt have those nasty wrinkles on the veldt). I...

Has Technology Made Hunting Too Easy?

I think a lot of it happens slowly, incrementally. I remember when just having a scope was REALLY exotic, back when zooms hadn't been invented yet. Now you can buy a halfway decent 4X12 AO scope for $79 and nobody thinks twice about it. But you'd think sooner or later things would max out. I...

    Hunters vs Hunters

I think the very nature of hunting has changed a lot since we were younger. For one thing, you have so much more technology. Also a much greater percent of the population is urban, not rural. So unless their parents hunt, few kids grow up exposed to hunting, or have that thrill of that "first...

    Black Mamba Pictures

Wow, what a thread. After reading that, I feel like I have a college degree in black mambas...:D A question here: given that a mamba bite can kill you in 20 minutes, is it feasible for PHs to carry an anti-venom injection in their first aid kits? I don't see that mentioned anywhere in this...

    Curious about SCI funding

I spent 35 years working in state government, much of it dealing with federal funding and audit-proofing various federal fund recipients. I had rubber-stamp approval authority of close to a billion dollars a year cross my desk. So when I look at large organizations like SCI, I tend to just...

Mark Sullivan kicked out of SCI

Maybe it's my rural West Texas upbringing, but I have to agree with this. I dislike Sullivan's youtube videos; they seem a little too self-glorifying, although I have to admit, the guy has cojones. He takes some of those animals at fog-your-glasses distance. In any case, if you have a beef...

How much freedom does the client have?

As the original poster in this thread, I'm pretty well done with this topic, and walking away from it feeling somewhat embarrassed at having asked what turned out to be a pretty dumb question. I'm sure there was a bit of eye-rolling out there... Just allow me to state that I asked...

How much freedom does the client have?

Look at these guys... the client can't hit the side of a barn, throws cigarettes on the ground... they shot that elephant full of more holes than a slice of bread. I don't necessarily hold it against the PH; I realize they can't cherry-pick their clients. But I gotta admit, I winced when I...

How much freedom does the client have?

Same here. I've seen that on a lot of YouTube videos, with the client and the PH both blasting away at some animal. I watched one a couple of days ago with both firing EIGHT shots, point blank, at an elephant before the poor creature finally expired. A brain shot is certainly more humane.

How much freedom does the client have?

I appreciate all your input, and I apologize for taking your time. This is a question that's been on my mind for, actually, many years, but until I found this forum, I never had the opportunity to directly ask African PHs. The marvels of the internet, eh?! I guess what I'm trying to do is...

How much freedom does the client have?

I didn't mean completely alone, I meant with the PH a few yards behind. Seems like in most of the African hunting videos I've seen, it's 4 or 5 guys standing up there rubbing elbows. That's the last thing in the world I'd want. -Ruark

How much freedom does the client have?

I've really enjoyed reading this forum, and appreciate the warm welcomes to my introduction. I'd like to ask a question about the client's "freedom," and by that I mean what the client is allowed to do, or rather, how much authority the PH has over what the client does. If I ever go on that...

    Canned Lion hunting

I've always wondered if it would be possible to start some organization that could "certify" or "approve" hunting places, especially in SA, as meeting minimum required standards for animal space, sportsmanlike opportunity, game living conditions, etc. This would be helpful to people planning...

Are red dot sights "catching on" in Dangerous Game hunting?

One of our main "keep it handy" guns out here is a S&W MP15 tactical rifle with a 30 rd. magazine. We never know when a yote, rabid skunk, chicken killing fox, feral hog, etc. is going to jump from out of nowhere, and just about everybody out here has 1 or 2 of these toys on their wall. One...

What is the worst rifle you have ever owned?

I had a Marlin XS7 .243 that started out being the worst, and ended up being the best. I wanted a reliable, cost effective, all purpose centerfire to use out here on our ranch, and this was perfect, especially with the synthetic stock. Out of the box, it shot 3 to 5 inch groups @ 100 yds. with...

    Greetings from Texas

Just ran across this forum, and I'm looking forward to reading it. I'm 64, retired, and live on a small ranch in central Texas. I have never been to Africa and probably never will, but it's been a dream of mine since I was a child. As a young boy, I spent many sleepless nights under the...
