Quality vs Costs - Your African Safari

BSO Dave, I understand where you are coming from. We probably agree more on this that it appears. I wouldn't mind paying more to hunt "Big" Kudu in a super good area. But I want to know what the price is before I shoot it not afterword. Even in a super good area how many 55+ Kudu are in that...

Quality vs Costs - Your African Safari

I would not hunt a place that charged more for a 57" Kudu than they charged for a 50" Kudu. In my opinion they need to set their day rate and trophy fees such that it allows them to run a comfortable bussines (make money/pay the bills). I will pay those fees. But let the horn inches fall...

To answer your question Marius, I would change my vote to #1 with your change above.

Quality vs Costs - Your African Safari

My vote was for the second one. Not really that concerned with super nice accommodations. Comfortable accommodations are fine by me. But figuring if I worked hard/hunted hard might be able to get an above average animal or two at this type of camp.

    What makes hunting Eland special?

Pretty much has been said already, but I will say it again. Tracking down a free range eland is probably one of the top (non-big 5) hunts that you can undertake. Finding tracks near a water hole and then tracking/walking them down is what it is all about, it can take many hours and miles or many...

"Footsteps of an Ivory Hunter" By Ian Nyschens and Cheryl Nyschens Morck. Not quite as good as "Months of the Sun" but still a good read.

Soft case needed in the truck?

Make sure to ask your PH if they can supply one ahead of time. So have a plan. I took one on both my trips.......just folded it in half and tucked it in my checked duffel bag......no real issue.

Cuisine Offered When Hunting In Africa - Comments, Remarks, Feedback

Best: Peppered Waterbuck Steak. Before I went over I was warned that waterbuck often was not any good. They could not have been more wrong. I like most others have not had a bad meal while on safari in Africa. A couple of runner ups: Ox-tailed soup made from the tail of a Cape Buffalo, almost...

    Is my trophy big enough?

Just going off of the longest horn measurement of 58.5 I would guess your total score (no real way for me to know with out accurately measuring it) should be around 138 which is most definitely a Gold Medal Kudu that would land in the book somewhere around #108. Congratulations on a very nice...

Africa huntings supported people you should never use

Like with all trophy judging you really do need more than a rear view, a frontal view would help eliminate the possibility of choosing an inferior specimen, although both seem to be way above just representative............:K Tongue:

Red Leg Thanks for the props! When I took my pile of African taxidermy work into these guys their eyes lit up when I started talking about the Caracal. .375 H&H

It has all pretty much been said....the 375 H&H is very versatile. I also have quick detach (Warne) rings, and two scopes (plus iron sights). I have a 1.75 - 5 power for dangerous game and up close work. Also 2 - 12 variable for plains game or that occasional longer shot. I am thinking about...

johnnyblues there is no reason on earth to "almost regret" your upcoming buffalo hunt. You are going to be hunting with a great PH, in my mind that is 75% of the battle right there. Thanks VonJager for your comment. I agree that the pose is not for everyone.
