    9.3x62mm Mauser Rear Sight

Aha! I have discovered McLaughlin's Rigby-style bolt-mounted peep/aperture sights after finding a thread on here and I like the look of those very much indeed. But I feel like I'd be apprehensive about securing a sight to a Mauser bolt (specifically to the hammer). Seems like a problem waiting...

    9.3x62mm Mauser Rear Sight

When I say "tangent", I mean a military-style ramp/tangent/ladder sight fitted to the barrel. That or express sights would work fine with a scope. But agreed, an aperture sight would probably get in the way of the scope unless it was attached to the hammer or if it folded and the scope was...

    9.3x62mm Mauser Rear Sight

I hadn't given much thought to an aperture, but as long it wasn't in the way of the scope I think I'd be open to the idea.

    9.3x62mm Mauser Rear Sight

I've looked at Numrich and several other sources for parts. If I decide to go with a 7x57mm rear sight, I should be all set. But I don't really need, or particularly want, one of those. If I could find a sporting tangent sight like I've seen on some vintage rifles, that'd be better, or if an...

    9.3x62mm Mauser Rear Sight

I'm thinking about it in meters instead of yards, since I'm sitting here looking at my Kar98k, which has notches in 50m increments up to 1km. Obviously that's vastly out of range for a 9.3mm, but even with, say, 300 or 400m maximum, a 25-meter-increment tangent sight would be fine with me. I've...

    9.3x62mm Mauser Rear Sight

Most 9.3mm I've seen has a much heavier bullet and I was planning to use 258, 286 grain bullets in mine. I'm not sure that a 7x57 sight would work very well with that.

    9.3x62mm Mauser Rear Sight

Hi everyone. I'm wanting to start working on a 9.3x62mm Mauser as a sort of medium-long-term project. I want to use a Kar98k/military-style tangent rear sight on this rifle, but I can't find one and don't really know where else to look. Obviously a sight designed for 8mm Mauser won't work with...

    Mauser 98 Barrel Profile

That's the one I meant, yes. As for the sights, they don't seem to have been especially common but I've seen military-style ramp/ladder sights on a few Mauser sporting rifles from the time (and on some converted military rifles as well). But I don't think a military sight for an 8mm rifle would...

OPINION: What are the most beautiful pelts in the world?

Tiger is beautiful and I've always had a particular fondness for jaguar. The larger spots vs leopard or cheetah look especially nice to me. Okapi have one of the most striking patterns of any animal, too. If it's just an artistic rendering, those would look great!

    Mauser 98 Barrel Profile

Hello everyone, Per a couple of my other threads, I'm interested in building a Mauser 98 in 9.3x62mm. The project has suffered a few setbacks but I'm still determined to go through with it and I wanted a little help. Here's what I'm going for: Military (preferably German) large-ring Gew98...

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

Hello everyone. Unfortunately the rifle I intended to purchase has been sold, so the project is off. Thanks for your help and suggestions anyway.

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

Hi Kawshik. Well, I don't really know what terrain. It'd vary with whatever state/country and game I was after, so... I suppose a little of everything bar arctic tundra or actual desert, or full jungle. But a synthetic stock on this rifle is not even a consideration, and while I'm fine with a...

Hello Paul. My intention was indeed to use a basic 4x, maybe 6x if I could find one, scope with a German No. 1 reticle. My hope is to find a nice vintage Hensoldt Dialytan or some similar design that I can use. W.G.455

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

That'd be fine with me if I could find the right one. But I honestly wouldn't know where to start looking.

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

As I said, I suspect the lack of the recoil lug is a prime candidate for why there's a crack. Walnut sporter stock vs laminate mil-issue stock might also be a factor but since most of the ones I've seen don't have the lug either?

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

Wow thanks! If the stock is serviceable, I can give it a try. If it works out, even better! And if not, well, I can salvage the buttplate and swivels and see about having the stock copied and/or replaced.

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

Well maybe. Gotta see what the crack's like, and decide if I want to deal with the barrel stuff first.

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

My guess is that since the rifle appears to lack the recoil lug/nut that military-issued rifles had, that'd be the most likely culprit. I intend to add one. But no, this wouldn't be a DIY even if it was just a (relatively) simple repair job, since I have little experience with the finer points...

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

It's actually already a pre-war sporting rifle, not a military-issue G.98. My intention is either to repair the current damage or have the existing sporting stock copied.

I'd love to but I haven't got the rifle yet. Will share a pic ASAP when I do.

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

There's nothing wrong with synthetic, just not on an oldschool Mauser like this one! My goal is to restore the rifle to what a hunter/explorer/"obtainer of rare antiquities" would've had pre-1945, and while I'd happily use a synthetic on a more recent vintage, there's nothing like a classic...

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

That was what I was leaning towards doing, although I'm not 100% on pillar bedding. I've never had a rifle bedded before and know very little about it. Have you a suggestion for a good stock maker or someone who can do the work for me in the USA?

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

I think I'd be most concerned simply with it getting worse or even failing but repairing it even with an obvious repair or pins would not necessarily upset me at all, assuming it's not bad enough to warrant a replacement stock. I suppose I'd just have to see it before I decided.

    Mauser Rifle Repair vs Restock

Hello all, I'm hoping to get started on a custom, or semi-custom, rifle build before too long once I've purchased the donor gun. What I've got in mind is converting a worn-out, inexpensive Mauser G.98 from 9x57mm to 9.3x62mm. Along with the rebarrel and bolt modification, the stock (which I'm...

    Pancontinental hunting list?

Hi cmk. No, the Sharps and 1885 don't seem to have been so popular on the far side of the Atlantic, but that's hardly surprising considering all the British and continental gunmakers producing single and double rifles at the time. The falling block action it uses was popular enough, though; best...

From what I can figure, the only calibre restriction I see is no centrefire rifles of .50-cal or up. Which I don't have one of, so that's fine. Ammo type shouldn't be an issue either; I'll check when I've settled on which locations I wanna try.

Oh I learned how to shoot when I was but a wee lad of 6 or 7. Started with Red Ryder, then an old Remington semiauto .22 (which we still have and plink with, just not as part of my personal collection; it's my dad's and isn't good for anything but .22 short after many, many years of weekend...

Well I'll be completely forthcoming: I've never hunted in my life, not unless shooting at some nuisance raccoons counts. I've mostly been a fisher and crabber, and while my dad used to go marsh hen hunting in his younger days, he never took me. (Not that I would've wanted to, because getting in...

    Pancontinental hunting list?

Not a Sharps, a Winchester 1885 High Wall. Think of it like a more compact Sharps action with the hammer in the middle of the receiver instead and protected by "walls" that give the action more strength. Made from 1885 through 1918...

    Pancontinental hunting list?

    C. Sharps in Montana, yes. They don't offer a .450NE but have told me they can build one for me should I want to. They (as well as Winchester at some point) do make a High Wall in .405 Winchester, though, and a Sharps as well; according to SAAMI specs, the .405 Win's max pressure is 46,000 PSI...

    Pancontinental hunting list?

This is my first proper thread, so please bear with me. These are what I've settled on acquiring/building for an all-around hunting "arsenal" that would be at home here in the USA as well as Africa, should I ever manage to get there, and I'd like to have y'all's thoughts on how viable it is...

Howdy all. New guy here from the state of Georgia. Hunting in Africa has been something of a dream for me for a while now; I'm not sure I'll ever get to but I figure there's no time like the present to get started on setting myself up for the opportunity. Or, for that matter, the backup option...
