Wildebeest, Wildebeest & Wildebeest.

I've taken many Blues, but only one Black Wilde.
Its Euro mount rifle rack is perhaps a bit gauche, but I couldn't resist.

Blue wildebeest was my first animal in Africa. Terrific all day effort with success coming just before sunset. Fortunately one shot with 30-06 shooting swift a-frame did the trick cleanly. Totally surprised by how beautiful they are in person. Nature documentaries do not do them justice. Definitely will hunt them again if the opportunity arises.

Here is an ancient blue...worn down and full of character. Chopped him with the 416 and he was nice enough to run out to the middle of the road. They are tough and we say if you don't hit one well, he will turn into a realtor and show you the rest of the property.

We had some brutal winds chasing this one around. Got setup on a hill 200 yards away. While laying prone with the rifle in a giant shooting bag the wind would gust and catch the suppressor/barrel and pull the sight completely off target!

Circled all the way around and tried to make a stalk without much cover. Finally our tracker had us get single file behind him while he held the giant shooting bag on his head and we slowly walked towards the herd in an open field.

Got within 75 yards and went prone and waited 20 minutes for an opening to shoot this one. Right as I was squeezing the trigger a cow shoved him in the rear and he jumped forward. My shot went into his guts. Waited about 5 more minutes and he lingered towards the back and I put two more shots right into his shoulder and he was done. View attachment 800907

I don't have one to show you....yet. When my buddy shot his blue this year, I was amazed at the size, coloring, and strength of them. They are a quintessential part of Africa and African hunting. Well done, ladies and gents!!!

My first bow kill in Africa was a blue wildebeest on my first trip to Namibia. Shot was maybe 15 yards when he finally separated from the herd. The whole herd took off and I figured the tracking job was gonna be tough with all those tracks. Then five or so minutes later they circled back around slowed back down right in front of us. I watched mine topple at maybe 60 yards out. That was a relief. Second trip to Namibia I took a black wildebeest with a rifle and I was hooked on them. I tried on my third trip, then in South Africa for another black wildebeest, but it didn't line up. My fourth trip it did with a big one in South Africa. Unofficial measurements would put him in Roland Ward if I wanted. I hit it solidly with my 375 Ruger and it didn't care. We tracked it for a couple hundred yards until we found it piled up in a pool of blood. That's a strong willed beast.

I have 2 - a blue and a black. Both have stories behind them. I would (will) happily hunt them again someday.

@Tundra Tiger
Really love the black, they are a crazy looking animal. Face and mane of a horse, legs of a giraffe and beautiful horns.
Got mine on the last day of our hunt on the last afternoon. 180 yards slightly quartering away. A 225gn accubonds out of the Whelen just in front of the last rib and out in front of the shoulder on the off side 10-15 yard dash and down. Very happy.

Thank you for the LIKE on my old post. It brought back memories as I lost her a year and a half ago, at 18+ years.
