Your opinion- Weatherby 25 RPM

I’m interested in hearing your opinion or experience with the Weatherby cartridge 25 Rebated Precision Magnum (RPM).

Many thanks.
I like everything loaded with a .257 bullet. But I don't see the advantage of cartridges designed for heavier bullets in the .257.

For me if I want retained energy, I'n going to go up in diameter of bullet and shoot the heavier weights that are now being marketed for the .257.

Too each their own, just buy lots of brass so you have it in the future.

I have a Sendero in 25-06AI that Kirby Allen accurized for me, fine rifle. If I wear out the barrel, I may go for a new tube in the 25RPM, it has a little more juice than the AI but with a fast twist. But I have a Ruger Number 1 in 257Wea so I don't know.

Maybe I am cynical but I don't really see what all these new cartridges really offer. They pretty much duplicate existing cartridges but are marketed as long range. They used to be called wildcats but now it seems mainstream manufacturers are the wildcatters. I suspect their marketing suckered a number of guys in and 5 years down the line, they dump the cartridge because of lack of sales. Seems to be the pattern. Then owners sell their rifle for 20c on the dollar and buy the next great cartridge. Good for rifle business. Guys shooting grandpappies 30-06 are not good for business. I suspect the bean counters have also figured that of I have 1 rifle, I shoot 10 rounds at the range. If I have 4 rifles, I shoot 20 or 30 rounds each range visit.

I considered a 257 Weatherby, but my 25-06 does everything I need it to do.
If I need a heavier bullet I move up in caliber.
To borrow a line from Bob Seger.
“Call me a relic, call me what you will / Say I'm old-fashioned, say I'm over the hill /“ Today's calibers ain't got the same soul.
Except for the 375 Ruger… and the 416 Ruger.

The "gains" from new cartridge design are minimal. Great for marketing and nerdy folks to make spread sheets with (aka me) lol. Once a year or so I look in my gun safe and say I should down size to what I actually "need".... never do it tho.

Grand pappies 3006 is all a man does need.... want often overrides it on occasion for me tho.

One thing I will say about "new" cartridges is they come with fast twist barrels factory. So if your not into building rifles and want heavier bullets it does offer some meaningful performance gains. Most people dont hunt where that would matter tho

Marketing hype and bullshit.
The only thing it's doing is a 130gn bullet at 3,000 fps.
The 25-06 is giving better velocities with all other bullet weights and less powder with far cheaper ammo and rifles.

Put the same twist barrel on a 25-06 and you still have a better cartridge

My own 25 with a 57mm case and 35 degree shoulder with less powder and less pressure is developing 200fps more with bullet weights up to 117gn. With the right twist barrel I think I would get 3,150fps with a 131gn high BC bullet.

The marketing hype makes the RMP think to come down the turnpike in the last 20 years when in actual fact with standard bullet weights it's not even as good as the 25-06 was 50 years ago.
I would prefer to pay $30 for a box of 25-06 than $80-100 for a box of new fangled 25RPM

I will stick with my 257 Weatherby Mag in that class. The new one seems to be just marketing.
@Spartan5
But the 25RPM is doing a whopping 3,379 fps with a 107 grainer and the 117 gn SST is screaming along at 3,150 fps
Dang the 257 Weatherby is doing those speeds at starting velocity before it warms up.
My own 25 is doing in excess of 3,600 fps with a 100grainer and in excess of 3,300with a 115-117 grainer.
Dang even the humble 25-06 is doing 3,400 fps with a 100 gn TTSX and only 54 gn of powder.
So to me it marketing bulshit once again.

I can't see how the 25RPM has more juice than the 25-06AI.
The AI gives another hundred plus fps over the standard 25-06 and that can be loaded to 3,400fos with a hundred grainer with no issues.
If'n it were me I would just stick a fast twist tube on your AI as you already have brass and dies and still have a better cartridge.

The folks who handload and want to use heavy 25 cal bullets and use long barrels will get gains. 5+ grains of powder over a 2506 is what it is.

While interested in the 25 rpm I have so much 2506 brass, a fast twist barrel in 2506 ai is probably my choice.... when I finish my other gun projects lol.

Hate to call this one BS tho.... its measurable gains. Ten years ago when folks were saying 6.5 creedmore were better elk carteidges than a 300 win mag ..... now thats BS :)

@Journey
This is my answer to the 25RPM,25-06 and 257 Weatherby.
Almost straight case, 2.44" case length, 35 degree shoulder and .257" long neck.

What's not to like

the case is a lengthened by 1/4" 284 Win, necked to .257. I don't see anything particularly new or exciting about it.
Haha this is exactly what I find exciting about it. For a standard bolt face and "standard" long action with a proper neck it seems to be the max you can get with a 25 cal.

All that said.... here i am after a few adult beverages debating the merits of a cartridge I probably wont ever get.:)

Design is solid tho imo, fairly balanced and what not.

If I won the lottery I would do a 6.53 scramjet with a ridiculously long barrel.

I have a 257 wby mag and am shooting a 100 grain ttsx at 3684 with a 5 shot average. I smacked a springbok at 435 yards and he was DRT. I also took all of my plains game on that trip up to a Kudu with it with absolutely no issue. The PH was actually giving me shit at first for using such a small caliber until he saw it does a really good job dealing death at such high velocities. I also took a croc with it, and I don't think he moved more than 4 inches after one to the brain and 2 more through its lungs. Long story short, the 25 RPM doesn't impress me much.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
