6.5 Creedmore Magnum using Federal +Peak Technology

I would love to see PEAK for 300wsm as thats my go too for slinging 200grain lead but would be just as happy with the 308 as their next release.

@Elkeater
As PO Ackerly said his aim wasn't to increase velocity it was to extend case life.
I have found when I make the AI version of a case I have to increase the powder charge to get back to the same velocity as the original load. More velocity is only achieved by putting more coal on the fire thus increasing the pressure.
PO found very few cases that actually showed any meaningful gain over the standard case but case life was greatly improved.
The 35 Whelen AI is a classic example. The gain ain't worth the effort. The AI version ain't doing much more than a properly loaded Whelen.
The 250 Savage, 7mm Mauser the old 06 and even the humble 30-30 show great improvement.
Others like the rounds base in the 308 even when they have the AI treatment show minimal improvement as the case is already at the optimum taper, you can't straighten it out much more
Roy Weatherby took the 3O0 H&H case with its long tapered case and gently shoulder the blew it out almost straight, altered the shoulder angle etc and made the ultimate 300. His double radius Venturi should did nothing but it sure sounded good and was a great marketing ploy. Then he poured a bucket full of coal in it and boosted the pressure over the H&H.
When you go for higher velocity in an AI case something has to give and that's usually pressure has to increase there's no free lunches. Changing powders can sometimes achieve
the same results especially with some of the newer powders.
That's just my humbly opinion tho
Bob
You are correct in there are no free lunches. But add a couple for grains of powder capacity and some of the newer powders and new bullet designs and you can boost performance without adding additional pressure. As an example using 6.5 staball powder which I’ve had great success with in a couple of different rifles I’m able to increase my powder charge by a fair bit. Now add to that a bullet specifically designed to reduce engraving pressure and you can increase velocity without pressure increases.

I do enjoy never having to trim brass too and honestly will probably continue to AI chambers that make sense just to not have to trim brass.

So I have reloaded a lot. I understand that the steel alloy case will withstand the 80,000
PSI but what it the pressure when the bullet leaves the case and enters the rifling? At some point in my mind you have to be exposing a 60,000 ish PSI barrel to well over that. I'm pretty happy with my loads for my 6.5x55, 6.5 Creed. If I want more velocity I can grab my 6.5-06 or 264 Win mag.

It is an interesting technology and something new in the world of calibers. Something new must be shown, because we have been watching the same thing for about 100 years. Increasing the pressure in the case is an expected new. When we want that, there are two ways. Changing the structure of the case and changing the gunpowder. In my opinion, if the structure of the case, changes and because of that one caliber has a higher pressure tolerance, then that makes no sense. Success and novelty can only be achieved if the gunpowder achieves a higher speed, while the recoil remains the same or changes very little. If we make a barrel out of steel and add 5 grams of powder to it to get a 10% higher velocity, while reducing the life of the barrel by 50% and increasing it by 30%... for me that is not a solution

@Razorback
Using the right powder you can safely give the little 08 a boost.
I run 150gn accubonds at 2,950 fps out of my son's 22" barrel 08, that's not much difference to the 06.
You can also get over 2,800fps with 168grainers in the little 08.
Market is a Wonderful tool to get people to buy newer and hoot better but similar can be done by a handloaders in my humble opinion.
Just by changing powders I got an extra 150-250 fps out of my 25 with the same or similar pressure.
I do love marketing hype it gets me thinking is it really that much better than what we can already do.
Bob
I agree. I’ve recently achieved velocities in 30-06 that rival factory loaded 300 win mag. Doing the same now with 300 HH. Hard to get factory loads with these older cartridges that are in the same ballpark that you can get with hand loads. But the option of having factory loads with that level of performance sure would be nice. Hand loading can be time consuming.

What powders were you using in your 308?

Just think what you can do hand loading these new steel alloy cases.

I have a Tikka in 6.5 creed. I have hunted Vaal and four tiny 10 with it. I enjoy the accuracy and lighter recoil and effective distance for smaller animals. I was really interested in the peak ammo. But tikka says its rifles can’t withstand the pressure. So at one level I’m glad I researched. But at another level I can see that as a problem for those that don’t do due diligence. My other rifles have been shooting hand loads developed for them. The 6.5CM really likes 143 ELDX for accuracy.

I always saw the 6.5 CM as the better 243. I haven’t killed anything with one, personally. I have loaded 127gr LRX, 130gr TMK, and 120 and 140gr Ballistic Tips for others. Velocities were pretty pedestrian, all around 2700 fps. But it kills deer and pigs just fine. For me, I prefer more capable cartridges for bear, elk, and moose. I just bought a 6.5 CM in a Kimber Montana. It should be a great deer rifle for me and the kids.

I am getting 2825 and 2845 with two 30-06 loads and 180gr A-Frames. Only 80fps slower than one of my 300s with the same bullet.

My September 1936M70, .30GVT'06 S#1830 likes 165gr. SST@2,960fps and 180gr.SST@ 2,745fps. Both loads shooting under 3/4"at 109yards and group 1"apart, so groups barely overlap a bit. Good enough for me. I don't need another 100fps.

These developments are aimed at military contracts but we get some of the rewards… military aircraft development aids in civilian tech and this is the same. The players are not being that secretive so info on how far this has come is there. I don’t know that they intend for the numbers to be public/published so I will just say it appears we are only scratching the surface of what peax alloy cases and pxt barrels can do. It sure isn’t about 100fps or anything someone is wildcatting… these are significant developments in barrel life, pressure management, and speed with short barreled suppressed firearms.

I love the 6.5 creedmoor in my Winchester model 70 supergrade in curly maple, beautiful rifle. It has dropped many whitetails and it is perfect for them, but i cant wait for +Peak its an amazing jump in performance!

My larger animal rifle is the Weatherby 307 Adventure in 7mm Backcountry, 20 inch barrel w/ banish backcountry suppressor it shoots the 155 grain Federal Terminal ascent 3,190 fps.. in sub 1 inch groups! Weatherby did amazing with this 307 action...its very smooth and accurate.

I can’t get excited high pressures. If I wanted a faster 6.5 I would just shoot a 6.5 prc.

I don’t really understand the push for performance in hunting arms.

This is 308 peak from another company. 150grain at 3050. It was in Backfire some time back. I don’t think it did 3000 and I don’t personally love Nosler BTs but it is a little more pop.

I get 2743 out of the Hornady 165CX superformance in my Kimber. I’m super happy with that.

I’ve used a lot of Nas3 cases. They are a two piece case instead of one like peak.

I have been getting about 100fps over brass with them. Maybe a little more. Most have been loading a little more powder (thinner walls in case) rather than higher pressure.

I’m excited about peak plus. 5.56 and the smaller creedmoors are gonna love it.

I love the idea of having the option for either or with the 6.5 creedmoor. It’ll be like running 38 special in my 357 magnum except the action length is the same on the 6.5. For whitetail standard is fine and if I need to stretch it out or get more energy then higher pressure will work great! All in the same rifle!

The push is from the military… we just get to benefit from added performance in short action calibers… it particularly shines with shorter barrels and supressors.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
Gents, if you book and pay your deposit before the end of this year , you can have the bigger cull package for the 2026 price! https://www.africahunting.com/threa...griffiths-safaris-starting-at-us-2-560.96285/
