From the shooting range

Winchester model 88. I wanted to keep this one all vintage. It’s wearing a made in the USA Redfield 3x9 scope, weaver steel rings and a one piece weaver base.
Pictures are from the last time I had it out at the range. 100 yards shooting federal blue box 150 grain soft points, from the bench.
I had planned on sending it off to JES to have the barrel re-chambered/ bored to 358 Winchester. After seeing how good she shoots, I’m going to keep it in 308.

I shot a schutzen ring target event today at my black powder club and young Betsy graced us with her presence , she lives with the cows and can’t understand why the bull won’t service her like he does the cows…..she’s a bit confused…..
At least she didn’t wander into the firing line looking for apples like she has been known to.

Your picture confused me at first. I was looking for the 10 ring. Never seen a camel target before.

She's been in a good paddock.

Our ring target is an original cast steel one from Germany made in the 1860’s, there are three that are known in Australia to have survived, (one is being used as a well cover?)it has thirteen scoring rings, the centre one(13 points and is 50 mm round ) is movable and flicks up a flag when hit to show the score. It’s a cast lead bullet only Target, black powder with muzzleloader or antique cartridge, no modern rifles, no scopes, open sights or peep sight. I’ll try and fine a picture of the target.

She’s a sort of club mascot, and as it’s on a working farm, there is an instant ceasefire the moment any livestock wanders on to the range, makes for an interesting match at times having to go and shoo the animals off

I always bring an eclectic assortment: Winchester 1885 Traditional Hunter in 405 Win, LH Steyr CLII in 30-06, Browning 1885 in 44 Magnum & a Wilson Combat Protector Carbine in 300 HAM'R on this particular day.

When I want the range all to myself, I usually go out into the Ouachita National Forest & find one of the Forest Service ranges. This is where I usually shoot my short-range big boomers.

How do you like the 300 Ham'r? I've had my eye on it but I recently got a 16" 300 blk barrel for free so I guess I'll be shooting supers for that caliber instead.

The 300 HAM'R is one of those interesting cartridges where to my mind, Bill Wilson did a great job of achieving the goal of having 30-30 like power out of the AR-15 using a standard 5.56 NATO bolt face & magazines. He mainly had hog & deer hunting in mind when he designed it & I bought mine to take with me to Texas the next time I go hog hunting there.

Unlike the 300 Blackout which was designed to be subsonic, the 300 HAM'R was designed to be supersonic and wring the maximum power out of an AR-15 with a simple barrel swap. With 130gr Speer Hot-Cor's I get 2500 fps & 1800 ft/lb at the muzzle with a 5" drop at 200 yards on a 100 yard zero. I think it's a fun rifle to shoot and an excellent choice for the type of hunting I do.

The thing that surprises me is that it isn't more popular. If Wilson Combat is the only company making them then the higher price for their rifles might be to blame. Maybe people just prefer the other rounds like the flatter shooting 6mm ARC or 6.5 Grendel. Maybe they favor the 450 Bushmaster for stopping power. There's like a dozen chamberings to choose from on that platform.

But for someone like me who has no desire to own a subsonic rifle, the disparity between the wildly popular 300 Blackout and the more niche 300 HAM'R always made me wonder if I was that much of an oddball for being excited about my choice & somewhat indifferent to the one everyone else seems to prefer. All I know is that I like mine a lot & I'm glad I got it.

Beautiful range, and for $3/day! That’s amazing. I pay $60 for one hour in a single indoor lane for my son and me.

The Mayflower range is run by the Arkansas Game & Fish Commision (AGFC) and they have some pretty nice facilities in central Arkansas. In 2022, Fiocchi had announced they were going to build a $41 million primer manufacturing facility in Little Rock. But then they were bought by a Czech company, the plans were put on hold & eventually cancelled this last spring. So I don't know if they'll keep supporting this nearby range that bears their name or not. Prices might go up a little if they don't but I'm sure it'll still be a great deal. It really is a nice cheap way to spend a day.
