Wow. I had heard the leopard quota was supposed to increase. Instead it is decreased? By all accounts there are plenty of Cape leopard. And they cause plenty of problems for domestic livestock. I have been told the restricted quotas ensure northern safari operations continue to monopolize the leopard hunting business. Just what I'm told.
 
Makes you scratch your head for sure, and PHASA appeared to be happy (my characterization) with the report. I guess it is better than the zero that was being allocated for years

From zero for five years to 11 is progress.
No formal CITES export quotas for leopards have been issued or utilized by South Africa since late 2021.
 
Sure. I noted that too, but one less leopard than last year’s allotment ?? And 10 leopards for the whole of SA doesn’t jive with what I hear from PHs.

It wouldn’t benefit PHASA to have fewer issued permits for their members. I just wonder why PHASA seemingly is applauding the report. Maybe I’m missing something.
 
I know several Outfitters/PH's who have been involved in Leopard studies in the Limpopo region for over 5 years. I understand this was in conjunctiuon with PHASA. Indications are the Leopard numbers have increased to not just healthy numbers but in some areas overpopulated causing problems with livestock. I wonder if the fact that a lot of SA Outfitters, some who are on the PHASA board are now selling higher dollar hunts in other Countries Tanzania, Zim, Uganda etc. could be the reason they want to keep Leopard permits low in SA?
 
I’m sure that a leopard permit and hunt in SA is more expensive than any other country other than possibly Tanzania. Ease of travel and infrastructure in SA tends to makes it more attractive to lots of folks.

Well we would have to find an Outfitter who is actually selling a Leopard hunt in SA to know. Also CBL Lion hunts are considerably cheaper in SA than anywhere else. I know CBL are not condoned by lots of huntesr but others are happy to pay a way lower price for SA than other countries.

According to a documentary I saw a while back, wearing leopard skin ceremonial robes has become a status symbol among some of the tribal "authorities" in RSA. Those select few desire to keep access to leopard skins restricted to themselves. Can the minister tell us who's been acquiring the few permits allotted? That might tell the tale.

In April, we hunted two consessions in Limpopo. We saw a leopard (In daylight!) on both.

A total joke and such a shame.
 
It's almost like a political advertisement. "Look what we did! Believe us, it's awesome!" I have to say as someone who doesn't even hunt CITES trophies, it sounded hokey to me...."

Hi Dr. Ray, I will be in Cooktown from Oct 16 to Oct 23 fishing Lizard Island Black Marlin Tournament.

I have several "slack" days after fishing before I head for stay in Sydney and Fiji.

Do you have any recommendations for 1 or 2 day hunt near Cooktown?

I've hunted both DG and PG in 4 different countries in Africa.
