I am a huge history buff and seek out old documentaries mainly on Africa, I stumbled across a 1966 Italian Film called Africa Addio, and kind of wish I didn’t.. Some horrific footage of hunting and poaching from the old days as well as political footage from this era. Seems the movie is pretty controversial for many reasons but worth a watch for us guys who value such information - true or staged.

One scene was two jeeps dragging ropes at speed through the bush tripping and destroying herds of zebras, Another a hunter (white) helicoptered in and shot an elephant that was blocked with the low flying helicopter, he smiles with the dead elephant, man would hate to be that guy today.

Some native hunting scenes with animals including elephant killed with spears and ambush, I realize that has been going on since the beginning of time.

Lots of genocide and brutality including executions. Just a warning
I appologize if a repost

It’s a really interesting documentary. Unbelievable some of the footage they got for how turbulent things were at that time. Sad how far South Africa has fell from thr South Africa it showed.

You’re right about South Africa, So sad…. Some of the footage is shocking, especially the helicopter footage over the Arab killings.

It's obviously a dark and somber documentary, and it does a good job showcasing the decline of post colonial Africa at the time as well as providing a reference for the current decline, but it's still always hard for me to not chuckle at the "Wait, these aren't whites, they're Italians" line

Interesting Film....Thanks for posting.

That 1966 Italian doc Africa Addio is raw as hell actual 1960s poaching hunts, spear ambushes, and colonial era brutality including executions and genocide vibes instead of polished “cute safari” crap. Those jeep zebra rope trips and the smiling hunter with his dead elephant are straight from the hip gold for history buffs, but yeah, it’s brutal and staged or real debate stuff that’ll leave you feeling gross. Worth it if you’re deep into that era’s unfiltered Africa footage just know it’s not light watching.

It’s definitely a tough film to watch, but also a fascinating snapshot of how Africa was being portrayed during that period. Some of the hunting footage is pretty shocking by today’s standards. I’d be interested in knowing how much of it was staged or heavily edited, though. Either way, the political footage and historical context make it worth watching if you’re interested in that era, as long as you take the presentation with a grain of salt.

Thanks for posting. Fascinating.

From what I´ve heard from my cousin who lived many years in the Congo, and through the Katanga uprising, what we see in the film about the mercenaries was not staged at all, it was actually very brutal.

You guys liked "A clockwork orange" didn't ya?

I'm with you. I saw a short interview with American Sniper that killed the Female Vietnamese sniper/torturer. It was insane.
