anyone brought meat back from greenland? it is my understanding that it can be done up to fifty pounds. just having trouble
figuring out all the regulations! leaving for greenland sept 17th any info would be greatly appreciated!!!

I don’t think it can be done…fish yes…. Game meat no…
I’ve brought frozen fish back many times from other countries.
You can’t bring so much as a beef jerky snack back you bought in the airport somewhere else (if they see or know)
I’m not sure what the difference is

Generally no — you cannot bring most meats back from Greenland to the United States for personal use.

U.S. rules are strict and controlled by multiple agencies (APHIS for animal disease risks, FSIS for meat inspection equivalence, and CBP for enforcement at the border). Greenland is not among the countries with established eligibility to export most meats to the U.S.

Key Rules

• APHIS restrictions: Meat from cattle, swine, sheep, goats, and many other animals is prohibited or heavily restricted from countries affected by (or not fully free of) diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), African swine fever, classical swine fever, BSE, and others. Travelers may only bring certain meats from disease-free countries and only with proper documentation proving origin. Greenland does not appear on lists of fully unrestricted sources for most red meats.

• FSIS personal-use allowance: Up to 50 pounds of meat, poultry, or egg products may be allowed for personal consumption if they meet all other requirements (including APHIS rules). However, the product must come from an eligible source and typically needs to meet commercial inspection standards. Most Greenlandic products do not qualify.

• Wild game / specialty meats: Reindeer, muskox, seal, whale, or other local Greenlandic game meats face additional restrictions (and in some cases outright prohibitions, similar to bushmeat rules). Seal and other marine mammal products also fall under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which generally bans importation.

• Cooked or processed products: Shelf-stable, commercially cooked/canned items in sealed packaging sometimes have more leeway than fresh, frozen, cured, or dried meat, but they still must clear APHIS and be properly documented. Homemade or locally processed items are almost always refused.

Practical Advice

• Always declare any food or animal products to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. Failure to declare can result in fines even if the item is later allowed. Declaring protects you from penalties.

• Keep original packaging, receipts, and any labels showing country of origin.

• Rules change with disease outbreaks, so check the latest information shortly before travel:

• APHIS Veterinary Services Permitting Assistant (best tool for current product/country status)

• APHIS “Traveling with Food or Agricultural Products” and “Meats, Poultry, and Seafood” pages

• FSIS Import Library (for country eligibility)

• Contact APHIS or CBP if you have a specific product in mind (e.g., vacuum-packed reindeer or commercially prepared items).

Bottom line: Do not plan on bringing meat home from Greenland. The safest and most reliable approach is to enjoy it while there and leave it behind. Fish and some seafood products often face fewer restrictions than land-animal meats, but even those should be verified in advance.

I do not mean to hijack the OP's thread, but I have always wondered can you bring back moose meat from any US state or a province in Canada. I always wanted to taste moose meat and would hunt one if I could bring the meat back. Thoughts?

You can from Canada and anywhere in the States. Even from Alaska through Canada. And from Hawaii.

But I dont think from Greenland is going to fly.....(literally and figuratively)

yes sir you can!

spent most of the day reserching and on the phone with usda! You can bring back up to 50 lbs
of meat from greenland! @Russ16 linked the exact website that will tell you where you can and cant import meat to the usa. Fish it seems is almost unregulated so hopefully we will be bringing back cod as well. pumped about this hunt and today just made it a little better!!!

As someone that’s flown internationally with fish, the best way is to send an email to customs, if they say yes they will also list off other agencies that may have jurisdiction…. Copy that email approving customs and then repeat with the agencies listed.

Keep copies of all the emails with you when traveling.

Yes, I’ve brought back moose meat from Ontario and have friends that drive up from Dallas every year and do it.

After all the tags and licenses you still have to buy a “moose export permit” for the privilege of taking the meat home, think it’s $40-50 permit.

Verify CWD rules. I flew back with Black Bear meat and fish from Canada. Declared it. Customs and Department of Agriculture could care less, they were more worried about my rifle.

After eating muskox, even after aging it over a week, it's not worth bringing it home. I went out and shot a caribou for the meat. (I had a tag) and it was great. Not to tell you what to do, just don't expect much from muskox.

I’m surprised. I killed a musk ox on Nunivak Island in 23 and it was one of the most tender, delicious meats I’ve ever eaten.
Hunt can’t much but the table fare was fantastic

Well mine was estimated at 18-20 years old. Maybe there is a difference. It was edible but the whole camp was complaining about “muskox again??”
We definitely enjoyed the caribou. I just wouldn’t pack up/export the muskox meat.
