25-06 or 257 Wby?

I LOVE my model 70 but I haven't heard a lot about exceptional accuracy in the smaller calibers so I only have my one 375 until a few weeks ago I picked up a used push feed 338WM. I'd like to find a deal in something like a 220 Swift or 22-250 if the accuracy is there.

I use a 257wby mag with 100gr TTSX’s and they normally go down right there. I think combined they’ve taken 3 total steps. Only time I grab the 300WM is when I’ve got a LE Bull Tag and don’t want anything handicapping me.
If I still had one, I’d use a 25-06 pushing quality projectiles.

Yeah I think I'm gonna convert to the 06 and just bite the bullet on another Mark V or try that 307 adventure. I try not to have two cartridges that overlap so much but the 06 is so much more practical and I can stock it with an adjustable lop so my daughter can shoot it then I'll have to get me a 257 just cause they're awesome.

It took me almost 2 years to get a Lipsey .257Wea Number 1, but worth the wait! I think if you are hard headed and persistent like me, you will find one.
I also have a Lipsey .264WM, unlike Number 1's I worked with in the past, these are quite accurate, esp. the 257. The 257 is as devasting as it gets for taking Deer!
I have a Sendero 25-06 that I used for several years and harvested many Mule Deer/Antelope/Whitetail.
I later sent this rifle to Kirby Allen in MT, had it rechambered to 25-06AI, skim bedded, trued and all that. It is a fine rifle.
So, I have a good deal of experience with all three of these. If I were starting from scratch in this modern era of fast twist and high BC bullets, I would go with the RPM or better yet a custom 257 Wea.
with a fast twist barrel. I say this if you want the max in long range potential in a 25 cal.
However, for most people, any of these will be great. If most all of your shooting is under 400 yds and
you want to shoot this rifle a lot, the 25-06 would be a good fit.

I don’t live in Elk Country so I want a cartridge that allows a responsible shot from different angles. For
me that cartridge is either a .338 Win Mag or .340 Bee with 250 gr or 300 gr bullets. If I lived in a region where I could come back every weekend until I found the perfect angle that was within the power of a .25-06 then it would suffice for elk.

Yeah I want to shoot this one a bit so the cheaper ammo is a bonus and is like to have a "guest rifle" or girlfriend gun and the 25-06 should be perfect for both. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go 06 on this Savage and save up for me another pretty Mark V or a Lipseys #1 that I didn't know existed until now. Is it stainless with upgraded wood like they have in 35 Whelen?
 
Your choices make good sense.
The Ruger is blue and Walnut, the forearm has nice figure, the Butt stock is average.
The older Red Pad Number 1's on average had better wood but usually were not as accurate as the recent version. I bought a very nice buttstock but may save it for a third Number 1.

I don't have a 257 Weatherby but the 25 I designed comes horribly close and even surpasses it with some projectiles
It launches 100grainers @3,660 fps, 115-117s at 3,340 and an 80gn outer edge mono at over 3,900fps.
It is a fearsome weapon on game out to any sane range. Sighted 2" high at 100 it zeros again out to 275-300 yards which means a backline hold on a fallow deer and tour fine to 400.
If you are a good shot it will deliver the same energy at 500 as the 243 at 250.
It's a very quick and empathetic killer of game.
The 257weartherby is hard on barrels.
I would waste the time in the AI version of the 25-06 for an extra 100fps. The standard 25-06 can be loaded with a 100gn TTSX to 3,400 fps by working up to 54 gn of H4350 and will handle any deer you shoot and give you good barrel life.
25s are inherently accurate mine groups less than moa @200.

If I was building a new 25 I personally would get a1:8 twist barrel to handle the new sleek 131 grainers for even longer range.
I do like my 25s and how they perform.

Those SST are lightning quick killers of game. Hit an animal in the lungs and it goes straight down.
You should be getting around 3,000fps.

I put a Llijla match grade stainless 24" pipe on my 25. That thing is sub moa at 200 and 300 yards.

I would steer clear of the 25RPM it hasn't been around long enough and may become another almost ran cartridge.
Just get a fast twist barrel for your 25 of choice.

You will not be disappointed with the 25-06. Just get a fast twist barrel. Ain't nothing going far if'n you hit it in the lungs with a 110gn TTSX or a 117gn SST. The velocity difference isn't worth worrying about at same game ranges.
Plus being a Savage you can swap barrels yourself and use the 25-96, your original barrel and even get a WHELEN barrel to swap into it.

My mate used my case design for his 25 and with outer edge monos he is getting 3,900fps.
Says it works real well on pigs a long long long way out.

Bob i live my 35 Whelen so far, have a nice little Ruger African in it and really enjoy it so far but I haven't scoped it yet so idk exactly whet accuracy I'll get from it. What exactly is your 25 design? If it the '25 Whelen' your mentioned?

My 25 is on a 303 British Case whit the case blown out almost straight, a one degree taper, the shoulder moved forward,35degee shoulder and a .257 neck length. Powder capacity is over 60gn. It's favourite powder is Hogdon superformance.
Fast, flat and deadly accurate.

The 25-06 with a 100gn TTSX will give you 3,400+fps with 54gn of 2209/H4350. This is a max load so work up to it.

Spent more on the cases of ammo than I did on the rifle.
I added a few boxes of 100 gr factory. With the idea of less meat damage.
I could not tell a difference.

A 115 gn combined technology silver tip ain't real meat friendly at 3,300++ fps at 300 either. Destroyed the off side shoulder, but hey it didn't travel far, just down.
