Snake Gaiters for Australia

Years ago I wore the Turtleskin brand of gaiters in the NT. They're light, easily packable, and snake proof. The Aussie PH I was with said I didn't need them but he's also the guy who got very nervous about the snakes when we found ourselves in high grass as the sun was going down. Apparently the rodents come out and followed by the snakes and you do not want to be in the middle!

Hi Brian - your upcoming trip sounds like it is shaping up to be a great adventure.
When I'm hunting in the territory, I wear waxed canvas 'oil skin', boot protectors. I prefer a velcro closure - much easier donning and doffing when taking a break.
Something like these.
They obviously don't provide maxium snake protection, but keep debris / burrs / seeds etc out of socks / boots.
Not the best photo (or the best legs) - but you get the idea.

I work in NPWS and we don’t use them.
Just not needed.
Having said that I almost stood on an eastern brown a couple months ago. Fell over backwards when I stepped back as it reared. Got up, took some pics and thought “blimey, that was close”

I always wear simple canvas gaiters anywhere in the bush. I like plain canvas ones. Don’t buy anything with a fancy material with camo pattern etc. You will spend hours picking burrs off them. I have had a red bellied black strike my boot once near a dam, ever since then I’ve worn gaiters .
Mark - I wear the same gaiters . And for what it’s worth your legs look better than mine !

Thanks Peter - I'll take that as a compliment, but - I hope you're not objectifying my legs - there's no place for that on AH.
Even if I do have the better legs, you definately have some better rifles - and, in the end, isn't that what really matters.

Never saw a snake I liked. I've seen several that I hate more than others. No Joke.

Sock savers are all you need. Absolutely useless against snakes but will keep crap out of your boots.

What in Africa they call gaiters I’ve always called sock protectors.
I live in Aus and when hunting down in Vic or walking paddocks for work through the warmer months I wear snake proof gaiters (moroka 30 non camo) Lots of browns and tigers around here and I usually have at least one or two close calls a year.
Bear in mind those moroka 30’s are loud when walking.
Up north I wear this. It’s more open and you can see where you’re going most of the time.

I wear the Moroka 30 when hunting. I am normally by myself and while others say they don't see snakes all I can say is they need to open their eyes. Every where I have been in Aussie, except the NW area I have seen snakes. Sock protectors do not cover where most Aust snakes will strike. When walking normally the snakes will feel your footsteps and get out of the way, unless on sand, mud, pine needles etc. When walking slow so as not to spook game your foot fall is softer and not picked up until very close. Stalking is when I have had most of my very close encounters. One of the worst was an Eastern Brown getting caught up in Bracken Fern as it was striking. If it hit it would have been high above the knee. Yep one big mother. On the other hand 3 of us walked within inches of a Red Belly Black and it just lay doggo. As I was last past I watched after passing and it didn't waste any time going into the bush.
I agree 100%. I have hunted southern Queensland and have seen three red bellied blacks in one morning. One I stood on, and one my GSP saw before I did. He jumped five feet in the air at the sight of it.
