One of my friends was giving me a hard time because I have more than a few guns. In her view, ok you have a rifle for hunting and maybe a handgun for self-defense but you don’t need more than that….

I took her view to heart and thought about it, briefly felt a little bad considering the cost…and to make myself feel better bought some more :) They just fill very different uses/niches, atleast that’s what I tell myself.

Anyway I did get to wondering if I am an outlier and need therapy or pretty average, hence the question if people have firearms, how many do they tend to have. I suspect I’m pretty average…
@JoeSoap
I have about six and signed over another six to my son so they aren't mine now ( but I can still use them)
My wife is a very loving caring lady.
I was looking at a button release gas operated shotgun for my self.
She said WHY DO YOU NEED IT????
I just told her that after my shoulder surgery I couldn't handle recoil like I used to and this allows me to use a shotgun with more manageable and shoulder friendly recoil.
My beautiful wife said in a loving voice if it will help and YOU can afford it go and buy it. Did I tell you my wife is a real treasure and cares about me and my health.
I smiled and told her thank you and went and bought it the next day along with some three inch magnum slug loads.

Ask her: "How many pairs of shoes does a woman really need"?
@Kalthoff
Not to mention the handbags to go with the shoes and the out fits to go with said shoes and handbags.
Then they buy another outfit and despite having 150 pairs of shoes and 80+ handbags she has to have another pair of shoes to go with the outfit she just got because nothing goes with it.

As a male I have a pair of hunting boots, a pair of joggers ( despite the fact that I don't jog or run) they are just comfortable, a pair of thongs/ flip flops and a pair of UGG Boots.
Any or all will suit for going to church, shopping or fine dining as well as everyday use. Simple.
No handbags/ man bags needed ( some say I need one) one wallet that's usually empty suffices. Clothes minimalist summer and winter
Same sleeveless shirts all year round, winter just put on a jacket, easy.

I’m in the “your wife still talks to you” category for the time being. I don’t necessarily need any more but I want more. I want a 416 Rigby and a double rifle. My wife wouldn’t care if I brought more guns home monthly, she isn’t into them, but has never said anything or rolled her eyes when a new one comes home. I think having 2 boys helps cause I just tell her they’ll get them when I’m gone.
@ReddingArcher
I built a custom rifle for my son when he was five.
My wife said it's really for you. 15 years later he used it and loves it.
If course it had to be a 25 cal.
No 243s in this man's house.

This is why you have joint cleaning days with buddies who have less guns. You get to admire each others and at the same time can get more cleaned together! :E Dancing:
@Spartan5
Do you admire or envy when your mates is bigger than yours Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
Yes I'm talking about calibre so you can get your mind out if the gutter now.

I have what I need, but there’s always one more out there I’d like to pick up. Limiting factor is space in the vault, because Mrs BeeMaa is fully onboard. ;)
@BeeMaa
Easy fix old son.
Get a bigger vault or more vaults
You could just put a steel door in the basement and turn it into one BIG vault. Problem solved.
Bob
I am a Texan. You need to drastically up your scale on the survey. Not even close!
@phillip Glass.
Texans don't have fun rooms. Dang the whole house, barn and even outhouse is a gunroon.
You never know when you are sitting on that outside shitter when a rattle snake is going to make an appearance. So you need a minimum of a shotgun, handgun and rifle in the outhouse alone.

Oz is the place where everything wants to kill you… with all of those snakes, spiders, crocs, and drop bears I can’t believe you guys ever walk outside without at least a long gun and a pistol on your hip for backup… :D

She clearly doesn’t understand hunting.., or firearms in general… they’re tools…

A carpenter doesn’t pound nails with a drill press… and he doesn’t turn screws with a hammer…

Each task calls for a certain tool… and if you’re a pro you might have several variations of the same tool.. a roofing hammer, a ball peen hammer, a sledge hammer, etc… all will drive a nail.. some aren’t exactly designed for that specific task..

You don’t hunt ducks with a 375h&h… and you don’t hunt Cape buffalo with a 12 gauge…

A pistol actually makes a terrible home defense firearm… but a 16” barreled AR at the same time isn’t great for CCW..

It all depends on what you own firearms for…
Agreed, when people tell me I don’t need that many I ask them how many golf clubs they own when you could play with only a driver and putter….

No different than clubs, different tools for different shots.

And I HATE golf….

Lol, Bob does your wife read your African hunting posts ;) … blink twice if she is behind you holding a gun, we’ll send help ;)

Ok but seriously, it is very awesome you have a fabulous wife like that, makes life’s journey so much more wonderful. I have a pretty awesome wife too.

On a side note, I’ve been meaning to ask you on your thoughts of the 35Whelen vs 9.3x62. I got a Lipsey’s 9.3x62, went through the effort to float and glass bedded it, but given it is easier to get 35 whelen ammo and do reloading for it in the US I am beginning to wonder if I should have gotten the 35 instead of the 9.3….

@JoeSoap
Both are great calibres but my preference is for the Whelen.
With hogdon CFE223 YOU CAN REALLY MAKE THE WHELEN SING
There's no flies on a 225gn 35 cal bullet at 2,900fps or a 25gn at 2,700fps
With a bit of judicious loading you can get the 310s going at 2,400+ fps.
Just my opinion tho.
In some African countries the 9.3 is legal in DG whereas the Whelen ain't.

That’s funny because it’s true! :ROFLMAO:

@LimbNoMo thank you for sharing that, I needed the ego boost of making it into the top 1% of something.

I also admit that I get a certain amount of pleasure when people ask me “well how many guns do you own” and I honestly answer…..

I don’t know I’d have to count them.

While living in North Carolina for over 5 years, I acquired over 20 firearms. Then I moved back to Ohio. With Ohio's hunting regs, and believing all a man really needs is a couple of shotguns, a couple of handguns, and a couple of rifles, I decided to reduce e my inventory. Because, overall it economically made since.

A few years and a wife later, I moved back to North Carolina. Once again my firearms inventory began to grow.

We later divorced and a few years later I moved to Tennessee, my my firearms inventory grew even more; ah hum, so did my archery equipment inventory.

Then came my opportunity to check off hunting Africa off my bucket list. My firearms inventory grew a bit more, followed by "deals i should have but could refuse". Don't ask!! But yeah, I have a nice inventory to cover all hunting seasons and IMO the proper caliber/gauge for every animal on earth.

LONG WINDED, One can and cannot have enough firearms or archery equipment. Nor can one have enough ammunition, black powder, archery and reloading components to feed one's firearms and/or archery passions.

It's Never About Greed or Social Status when it comes to the amount or type weapons a hunter or shooter owns!! It's about being able to have the proper weapon, and shooting supplies available, on hand, to provide food for the table!!

Individuald preferences: Having a minimum of 2+ weapons of choice, just in case one becomes ineffective, is just proper preparedness.

One can never have too many firearms or amount of ammunition.

I fall into the John Wick category x3! Between a career in the Army and then in law enforcement I have my fair share of black guns and handguns. Occupational hazard, don't you know. If the tool of the trade goes bang, I should know how they all shoot, right!? Then I have all my hunting rifles, ranging from .22 LR up to .458 Win Mag. Oh, and then there are the collector guns. Of course, two is one and one is none, so I have to have at least two guns in every caliber in case the first gun goes down. Plus it would be silly to stock ammo and reloading supplies for just one gun, right? So yeah, now I have a gun room that would make John Wick proud!

I’ve got more than my wife…
@Certus
What more shoes.
A man only needs a pair of hunting boots, a pair of flip flops and a pair of UGG boots and a pair of joggers for special occasions. So your poor wife mustn't have many shoes or you have heaps.
