I have a mountain lion hunt booked and can’t decide whether I would do a full body mount on a pedestal or a rug with the head mounted? The cost delta seems to be considerable which is hard to overlook. What do you guys think? Do you have a taxidermist you recommend?

Thanks,
Mauser

There are a lot of taxidermists that do cats really well but do your diligence because cats require some special skills to be done well-depending on where you have access to, my top choices would be Dean Schulte, Tracy Jacobsen or my first preference would be Phil Soucy.
Best luck on your hunt, I do love chasing hounds!
I’ve killed several cats and bears, here is my only mount. I did have a pedestal done with one of mine but it resides at my parents home. It was much cheaper at the time but turned out really nice.

Mine was done by a taxidermist that is not in the business any longer-

What style of hunting and where? That could determine where you get taxidermy done.

I prefer full body mounts over rugs. Fifty some years ago when I shot my first black bear I had him done in a rug mount. At one time I had it on the floor, but that gets in the way, and if people walk on it, that will ruin it. An animal rug takes up a lot of wall space, but I l now have him on a stairway wall where he fits nicely. I'll never have another rug mount made.

I had my mountain lion and leopard full mounted. I had my leopard mounted on a floor pedestal and with the habitat Monarch Taxidermy in Helena, MT. put on it. I think that it looks real nice.

I had a local taxidermist, who has done most of my taxidermy work, but is VERY slow, do my mountain lion mount. He does excellent work on the animals, but not much for habitat. I'd like some snow on the rocks of my lion mount. He's temporarily in front of my fireplace until I can remodel that room and get some more wall space.

We looked at a lot of taxidermists. Mike was who we went with. And we have treed dozens of lions. So we have a pretty good idea what they really look like. Not a fan of the open snarl look. Never see that on a treed cat. They kinda look at you with disdain. Lol.

@Mauser3000 - you pose a good question and one only You can decide. I’ve gone on 3 Mountain lion guided hunts (2 Idaho, 1 British Columbia) and Never killed a Mountain Lion but on my 2nd hunt (Idaho) my friend killed a great Tom - Big head and 155lb body. He did a Life Size mount and taxidermy quality was excellent - we carefully researched which taxidermist to use because “Cats” seem to require special skills otherwise they can look Unnatural & “stiff” (he used Kanati in PA - after visiting them and seeing some of their Cat mounts). What I plan to do - if I ever get one - is Life Size mount IF it is a true Trophy Cat = Tom, large skull & body over 140lbs.. For a smaller Cat —- Rug mount, no sense taking up room in my home with an “average” Cat. My recommendation, for what it’s worth, research your Taxidermist carefully and view photos and actual examples of their work before selecting a taxidermist….if possible do NOT let cost drive your decision. Also, regarding your hunt & Guide selection - have discussions in advance with your Guide about what type of Cat you’ll be satisfied with. Many Guides will tree and expect you to shoot the first “Legal” cat. I made it clear to my Guide I was ONLY interested in a Trophy quality Tom and passed up the chance for a smaller/120 lb. Male and also didn’t even run “smaller tracks” —- went home empty handed but I had Zero interest in a Small cat. Good Luck, hope you get a good chase — that’s where the excitement is.

I’ve booked a hound hunt in Utah. I’m willing to ship the hide wherever to be mounted.

He does do nice work! I’m with you, I like natural poses. The snarling look doesn’t look as realistic on bears or lions.

I’ve never had a rug done. The largest of my bears is full body mounted. The smaller ones I gave the hides away. I definitely wouldn’t display a rug on the floor, so hanging over a banister or wall mounted would be the way to do. I like animals whether shoulder or full body mounted to look natural so I tend to lean that way.

I appreciate that the title of your post didn't say "Show us your COUGAR mounts". It would have been entertaining, but certainly could have gone in a much different direction!
I was very careful in my wording, especially with this crowd haha

I wish I could. I can’t confirm or deny I have ever shot one. Even if it was in another country.

@Mauser3000 - I’m sure some AH members can recommend some top taxidermists that do great work on Cats. When I researched areas for large Toms - Utah, Idaho, and BC were taking the largest record book skulls…but it all depends on what Cat ends up in your Tree. I try to use a Taxidermist that I’m familiar with, have actually seen his work, and have some type of business history with him (drove 300 miles to visit one before I trusted them to get my African work done). I also had some bad experiences using Taxidermists “Guide recommended” and local to area I hunted - sometimes these taxidermists don’t give you their Best effort, knowing they’ll never see you again, also the Guide may be getting a favor in return sending his clients to these taxidermists (free or discounted work for himself etc..). Do careful research - you’ll need to obtain a CITES Permit regardless (taxidermist/guide may handle that for you) for any Cat before you can send it out of State so it’s likely a Year or longer before that mount ever gets into your Trophy Room…..worth waiting for the right Taxidermist. If you get one - post some pictures !!

I recently received my full body mountain lion mount. It wasn't quite right and I talked with the taxidermist, David Majors in Cypress, TX, and he re-did it, no charge.

The first version had the cat looking up. Since I was mounting the trophy at about 9-10 ft high on a wall, I wanted the cat looking downward. I wanted a relaxed look and I think this was achieved. I am having my leopard done in Namibia and it will be the mirror image of the mountain lion. I plan to have the two sort of head to head.

Nice Report! Im about to pull the trigger on booking the LDE with Patrick. I have been talking about it with him for about 3 yrs now. Romain hit me up the other day with an offer I can't refuse for 2027.

Andrew, I commented that your on 375 H&H for sale was the fair price.

Like I commented, my classic stainless has the original 24” barrel.

Did you buy yours with the barrel already cut down to 21” or did you do it (or a gunsmith)?
