What took you by surprise on your first DG/PG hunt?

just how good the trackers were.

    338 Winchester Magnum

I took my 338win mag to Africa both times I went. I t is great for all plains game. I shoot 225gr Swift A-Frames over 71gr IMR4350 and a Fed215 primer. Never had to chase any animal I shot. I strongly suggest using the 338Win Mag.

    Barnes Triple Shock 165 gr

Quite a number-257R,25-06, 257W,30-06,338Fed,338Win mag,6.5X55,264wi mag,6.5X300W,7-08,308win. I have taken game with all of them. Some in Africa and some in different states of the USA. All have been one shot kills with little to no tracking.

    Barnes Triple Shock 165 gr

I have seen that with the tsx bullets. I use the TTSX or LRX and have never had that happen. The tip makes the difference.

    All copper bullets

They work well and I have taken a number of animals with the TTSX and LRX bullets. Push them fast for accuracy and terminal performance. Also set them deep for accuracy. They need bullet jump. I seat mine so the top relief groove is just showing---No crimp. That said I still prefer the Swift...

    Electric make better ones.

    .338 Win Mag

I took mine on both trips and everything I shot died on the spot. I took Steenbock to Eland. If you like it and shoot it well take it. I used Fed215 primer, 71grs of IMR4350 and a 225gr Swift A-frame.

    Daypack/backpack?

Hunted SA twice. No need for a pack. I wear the binos and carry my rifle. I have 10 more rounds on the butt stock. The tracker carried water. I usually left my camera(large one) in the truck and carried a small one in one of my pockets. Sometimes I stuck a few hard candies in my pocket.

    on a lighter note...

I had to push my 67 Mustang when I blew up the rear end. I was by myself. Glad the tow truck got there soon. Also glad I had a spare at the house.

    on a lighter note...

I had a poly choke on my bolt actions shotgun when I was a kid.
