The Ross Arrives!

That's a great looking rifle and a real neat find. Congrats.

Now comes finding something to feed it with. I thought I had a line on Woodleighs, but it was an outdated website!

Hawk bullets make them it seems.
There was a Canadian distributor Summach Sports. Their website is down which is too bad because nice folks ran it.

You are right, they do make them. They are one thou small, and the only thing I know about Hawk is @rookhawk’s troubles. So I was trying to avoid them!

Woodleighs seemed like the best all around option.

Hammer bullets said they would make whatever I asked for, but I also don’t know much about them.

Great post. I have one of these also. Before the brass became available I went through the process of forming and modifying 375 ruger brass, tedious, but it did work i.e. the gun fired and ejected it. I got side tracked after that, but I did find 2 boxes of original ammo. I think the ammo is way too valuable to shoot as the boxes alone are on another site for about $300 ! I don’t know if I have any correct bullets here with me, but I’ll check. I’m glad you found dies, they’re rare. I was thinking about loaning them to you, but I may sell the rifle. She’s a beauty, pop-up peep and all.
Have you thought about powder coated lead bullets? I think nominal bullet velocity is 2700-2800 fps.
The Lord Grey lion hunting incident (hunting lions on horseback) piqued my interest. Not the fault of the rifle, but even though morbid, it does fit well into African hunting lore.
enjoy that fine rifle.

Pictures?!

I know absolutely anything about cast lead bullets, but I know there are a few knowledgeable members on here.

With regards to Lord Grey, It’s amazing how the gun community can grab into something and never have their minds changed. (I’m looking at you 458WM and Weatherby haters).

Times change and technologies change with them, so if I can find a quality bullet that works on elk or moose, figure out a scope mount, and the guns a shooter, I’m bringing it back from extinction. Hell, I’d even take it to Africa, lost ammo be damned!

Very cool rifle. I love the feel of them.

Ross at one time had the lease on the Ngorongoro crater.
Could you imagine the hunting that he could have done in there? It would have been the Garden if Eden!

Lead bullets would have to be pretty hard cast even with lower velocity. There are other methods like bumping up bullets of slightly lower diameter. I’ve never done that, but someone here has. I’ll try to post a few photos of my Ross, but will have to study instructions first. Mine is near pristine, I wouldn’t dream of mounting a scope on it. I might suggest you take the bolt apart so you understand the right way from the wrong way to reassemble it and then avoid one of the things that people talk about its failings. The failure is due to human error, it’s a great action. Being in Canada, I’ll bet there are some folks who know it well. The rifle is simply elegant.

You have probably seen this but I thought it would be of interest to others. A great analysis of the issue that seems to show the stories are only partially true.

I did see this a couple weeks ago, good video over all.

Here are some photos of my 280 Ross. I think I said I wouldn’t drill it for a scope, but that just shows how long it’s been since I really looked at it. I don’t know what the 2 holes on the left side of the receiver were for. I suppose some kind of scope mount. Also a few photos of original ammo.
I checked and found I had brought the dies, but forgot to bring new Hornady brass. I also had brought some of the reformed 375 Ruger brass and the easier to convert 300 H&H. I didn’t find any correct size (.288 I think) bullets.

That’s a great looking rifle, and find it interesting that the bolt was jewelled at some point. I have never seen that in a Ross before, and had been curious as to how it would look.

I would bet those two holes are from a side mount of some sort.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.
