500 schuler magazine

Hi all

I just purchased a 500 Jeffery project that is maybe 20% complete. It’s a new barrelled action and stock blank. It has not been opened up at all.

has anyone got and detailed pictures of a single stack Schuler magazine? I’m interested to see how the feed lips actually work. I’ve seen the video of the 3 shot jeffery feeding. But it doesn’t show the feed lips clearly.

These two are German pre-World War II advertisements of the .500 Schuler .

This is an original German August Schuler Model “ Jumbo “ in .500 Schuler .

Thanks for the compliment, H-H, but I'm not a gunsmith. I'm an 82 year old retired lawyer with an enormous curiosity about big bore rifles and a history of working with top of the line gunsmiths.

My .500 Jeffrey is built on a BRNO 602 action with a normal zig-zag magazine. I can't bear to look at the in line magazine rifles, mainly because I can't imagine how one would carry one with one hand at the normal place, the balance point.

You learn something new everyday! Never heard of a 404 magnum Schuler before! Looks like it also has a rebated rim like the .500. So can we assume it is a necked down .500 Schuler? This must be one of the rarest rifles out there.

Unfortunately not was I was after. Was hoping for some pictures of the mag box and feed lips.

I own an original August Schuler in 500 Schuler. I have attached photos of the magazine box, ramp, rails, and follower. The follower was made for the 500 and much different than standard Mauser follower. There is a clip on the right side of the rail that keeps the 500 rounds from popping out of the magazine. Similar to the clips used by Westley Richards on the 425 WR but Westley used clips on both sides of the rails. I am not much of a photographer but the clip can be seen in one of the top down pictures. I hope this will be useful.

That is a stunning rifle and the pic of the clip prefectly shows how it works to hold the cartridge against the underside of the opposite rail and from "popping out". Simple 22 LR technology but extremly effective and how I made a 303 Lee Enfield magazine hold shortened 405 Win cartridges (400 lee Speed) in a single stack formation.

Unfortunately not . If I ever own a .500 caliber rifle , it’s going to be the .505 Gibbs . But don’t get me wrong . I’ve got absolutely nothing against the .500 Jeffery .

Thank you. This was just what I was hoping for. It looks like very simple method to achieve feeding as they are still using 1 on the feed rails. As you can see I still have a lot of work ahead of me. I paid almost nothing for the project. I plan to make a new bottom metal and follower myself, have the barrel recontoured to a stepped profile and fitted with a 1/4 rib.

It will be a slow process as I’m also building a 404 Jeffery and an 8x68 for a pair to take on safari once Covid disappears. These 2 were already underway, then I seen the 500 for sale and couldn’t resist.

If I could see a photo of the the magazine open showing the the top of the magazine would be great.

I use the term building loosely. I’ll pay someone much smarter than me to do most of the work. I will build the magazine and sights myself. But opening the action, feeding, stockwork etc will go to someone else.

I am planning to have a 9.3x62 built on a commercial 98 action I have currently cambered in 8x57. It is some small German Guild Gun, but I forget the maker. I am always interested in other gun projects. Especially big bores.

My 9.3x62. Left hand sako Bavarian. It’s a very nice rifle to shoot considering it’s throwing 250 grains of lead at a good velocity.
