Unless there is a marked improvement in the security situation there in the near future, I will be planning to go elsewhere. If I had to decide today, no way.

I would stay away from any country in the Sahel region, there is a lot of Al Qaeda unrest there.

Can you elaborate exactly where you mean?

Australia medium? Come on, there's very few places in the world safer to visit.

It was a favourite past time to abduct foreign folks in CAR. May be an exported skill set.

It's bloody dangerous down there.

A couple Warthogs laying waste to that motorcycle caravan would be something to see.

All countries south of the Sahara desert, Mauritania, Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea.

There is Al Quaeda activity in all of them.

So may I assume Benin is somewhat safe?

I was in Benin two years ago, and neither saw nor heard anything to cause concern. I was in Ethiopia last year just after a state of emergency was declared and even though I was in the Danakil (“no travel”) and the mountains, I saw nothing other than a heavy army presence (which may be normal). Planning to be in Cameroon in January.

Having said that, I don’t think I’m an idiot (others may disagree . . .). I would stay away from CAR for the time being.

These alerts tend to the conservative, for obvious reasons. Find an outfitter you trust, and listen to them.

Good advise sir. Yes we are strongly considering Earnest of Spear Safaris for Burkina Faso and I have another outfitter in Benin we’re very interested in. Our Benin PH is trying to work out a better deal ($$) for which he said he definitely can. Let’s see.

French air strike in Burkina Faso kills rebels: army
2018-10-06 07:16
French warplanes killed around 10 rebels in northern Burkina Faso following a deadly raid on a gendarmerie, the Burkinabe military command announced on Friday.

The French intervention came after heavily armed rebels killed a paramilitary gendarme in an attack at Inata, in the northern Soum province, overnight on Wednesday to Thursday, the army said in a statement. Another gendarme was wounded in the attack.

In a separate attack on Thursday, an improvised explosive device (IED) killed six soldiers on patrol in the east of the country, the statement added.

French military command confirmed in a statement that two Mirage 2000 fighters carried out the air strikes after a Reaper drone detected a column of motorbikes leaving the site of the attack.

Burkina Faso, which borders Mali and Niger, has been the site of regular jihadist attacks since early 2015, particularly in the north and east of the country, as well in the capital, Ouagadougou.

Operation Barkhane, the French anti-terrorist force in the Sahel region, deploys more than 4 000 soldiers in five countries - Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Chad - equipped with warplanes and armoured vehicles.
