Popularity of 12 gauge shotguns

Well i hope to do so. Also don't get me wrong , 12 ga is one of my most favorite gauge for a shotgun . i just don't understand why it's so popular. And on the topic of firing a gun, a have the opportunity of firing a 12ga shotgun this Sunday.

I recall you stated the .460 Weatherby and .600 OK were two of your favorite rifles for safari. Do you have the opportunity to shoot either of these Sunday? If so, please post a video!

I work with over a thousand middle and high school clay target shooters each year.

Nearly all of them (boys & girls) shoot a 12 gauge.

Yep. Just started my grandson shooting skeet this summer. He turned twelve in May and not a real big kid. Quite slender but he handles my Citori O/U twelve gauge with 28" barrels just fine. He regularly shoots 17 to 21 and only three rounds a week. I think the gun is still a bit long for him but hard to argue with those results. He rarely misses a double. Shot all four targets on station one his first round of skeet.

Yeah, he'll need to grow into that shooting vest.

FWIW I just learned yesterday that the only shell manufacturer in Sourh Africa, Veld, went under years ago. Gun stores here still import shells, but almost exclusively 12ga. If you want to do any wing shooting or hares, etc over here with anything other than a 12ga, you’re going to need to bring ammo… and considering the weight restrictions on ammo for travel, you’re going to be pretty limited…

As such, it seems 12 ga is the only viable option for locals or international hunters in SA…

If you can afford it, TSK makes the best adjustable stock IMO.

There are a few more affordable stocks out there, and some are pretty good, but I don't remember the names. Sorry.


Some of my schools have short LOP shotguns that are loaned or sold to younger shooter's parents, until they are 16-18.

I work for a state game agency and we GAVE away 900,000 12 gauge shells to schools with shotgun teams as the result of PR tax revenue to our state.


No gun registration in most states, makes it really easy!

Don't think so....we get these ones in the gunshop here and i have some..made in SA....the 2 ball rubber baton rounds work well also....

Thanks. I'll check them out. Grandson is left-handed but right eye dominant so I started him shooting right-handed. To be handicapped that way and doing so well right out of the chute was pretty amazing.

Where are you located? I'm thinking of running him across the border for competitions in MN. There's nothing for kids up here. Very big down there.

Edit: I see you're in Georgia. That would be a long drive! Spent some time at Ft Gordon in Augusta early '71 when at MP school. Fortunately, I finished training before summer set in. I much prefer snow and ice over bugs and hot humidity

Many men make the mistake of buying a lightweight 20 gauge for their children or wife, and it absolutely beats them up.

A, well fit, 12 gauge is the most useful shotgun in the world, without a doubt.

I live in the mountains of NE Georgia.

Hardly any bugs, but we did hit a high of 92 one day this summer.

But it's so full of intolerable people, that no one in their right mind would ever consider moving here.
