What would your “special occasion” rifle purchase be?

I don’t mean mean unlimited budget but something that would be realistically within your means.

You have a special anniversary, a significant accomplishment or milestone hunt coming up; which rifle do you buy?

I’m currently leaning towards a quality, semi bespoke CRF magazine rifle for this goal.

A Mauser M98 Magnum Diplomat in 416 Rigby is what comes to mind.

Classic Mauser name and legendary CRF action, full length magnum cartridge, 4+1 capacity, nitrided finish, no frills utilitarian prestige vs some of its British counterparts, single square bridge with express sights, attainable price point…

What about you?

I would do a Rigby Highland Stalker in your desired caliber if it was me

I've been thinking lately to treat my self with a colt 1911, 45 acp, single stack, classic. Nickle plated.

A quality semi-custom bolt gun in 458 Lott. Or if the stars lined up, a vintage double in 577 NE.

Those two cartridges would round out my large bore gun collection nicely.

Several years back, my dad had abruptly retired from the company he pioneered. I was left, along with my brother, to run the business.

I pushed hard to grow and take risks that offered rewards. The day I signed the contract for the biggest job our company had ever done is the same day I purchased this rifle.

A Cooper model 52 in 30-06.

Not sure, probably a nice bolt action in a Mauser action with great glass. Realistically probably somewhere in the plains game span of cartridges ..

7x64 is sounding good at the moment.

Already did that. As you know I have the Heym 89b in 450/400 which I recently hunted with (write up to come), but there was a need and want for a PG rifle. Cost wasn't an issue, not that such a rifle would be big ticket anyway, but it meant that a Highland Stalker wasn't off the list. So I looked at one at the Rigby evening at Safari and Outdoor, the celebration Bell 275 one. Donned the gloves and handled it, very nice, no big heart flutter. But I was a little shocked at the excitement felt when the brand new Ruger No1 pitched up in a small gun shop in Johannesburg. Old stock, few here want a single shot. Love at first sight, bought, and no more cravings.

Oops, already did it..

Seriously looking for a Birmingham BLE game gun chambered for 2 1/2”, 12 ga. with 30” tubes. Stopping by Westley Richards in Birmingham today to see what Trigger has on the rack.

A .505 Gibbs built on a Granite Mountain Arms African Magnum Mauser action by either Joe Smithson or Ryan Breeding. With the extended Rigby Type III floor plate & bevelled extractor.

Let’s assume that I someday manage to rob the National Bank. In that case, it would have to be a James Purdey & Sons sidelock ejector in .600 Nitro Express.

Money no object : a Westley Richard’s droplock in .500NE, with additional 450/400 barrels and 20bore barrels.

More realistic, a Heym 89b .500 NE

thanks for your reply bob , is it feasible to build a 444 on a P14/M17 , or is the no4 enfield easier to build? i know where i can buy a lothar walther barrel in 44, 1-38 twist , but i think with a barrel crown of .650" the profile is too light .
