Wanted Mannlicher-Schoenauer In 458

@flatwater bill Any/all help is appreciated. This is the gun Richard Harland used (and loved) in his government work of eradicating entire elephant herds in the Tsetse fly corridors. I love hunting with these old guns.

Rotary magazine?

All Mannlicher Schoenauers have the rotary magazine.

That is the 'Schoenauer' in Mannlicher Schoenauer. A Mannlicher 'action' with Otto Schoenauer's wonderful rotary magazine.

Thank you Sir , much appreciated. Something not all people knows, I can only shoot round nose profile bullets in the rotary magazine in the .458 Mannlicher Shoenauer , the profile of the magazine rotary plates does not feed any other bullet profile..this is so with all Mannlicher Schoenauers

John , Terry Irwin had one made by Mannlicher Schoenauer in the early sixties when he worked in the Selous Game Reserve Tanzania There is a Zimbabwe PH with two sons who had a .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer as well ..can not remember his name but I did spoke to him years ago.. Now I remember, Barry Duckworth had one in Rhodesia /Zimbabwe

The one I bought from my Professor when completed my Master`s Degree has been standing for thirty years in a save, it has been shot four times as indicated by my Professor. Since then I shot it as well, the barrel looks like it never has been shot .

Yes, Barry told me as well about him using the .458 MS in his culling operations. I contacted him after receiving the .458 MS .

Quite right.

For my M1910 I have loaded as close to this precise profile as I could with (now practically extinct) Hornady 3715 270 grain RN:

Other profiles / shapes have been used by others but it is essential that they not be too short (overall length of cartridge) or too narrow at the upper third of the projectile, lest they fall into a gap as the follower rotates and misaligning / binding which causes a jam if more than two are loaded in the magazine.

Properly sized cartridges in a Schoenauer magazine act rather as roller bearings in a precisely fitted race.

Note the original prices of MS in the Stoeger catalog images of the time Magnums were in production:

Models MC, MCA were $198 USD on the 1962 catalog page above while Magnum models were $298 in the 1958 Stoeger catalog image below, $550 in Premier Grade:

Per usinflationcalculator, $550. USD of 1958 would today equal $5787.88. The standard grade Magnum's price of $298 would be a mere $3135.98, and that's when they could be ordered new. Add to that their present rarity and $4500. doesn't seem at all 'out of line'.

As far as pointed bullets and the MS magazine are concerned, the problem is related to the cartridge 6,5x54. I have no problems in my both MS rifles with the cartridges 8x57IS and 9,3x64, and bullets with pointed nose shape.

I really enjoy shooting the. 458 Mannlicher Schoenaur, to me it is the perfect walk and stalk close up dangerous game hunting rifle with it's sleek design.
It proofed it's deadly effectiveness when engaging whole families of elephants culling operations by Richard Harland using it. Keep in mind Richard later had he's own. 458 Winchester as well.

I think it is not an every day rifle you will encounter in a lot of hunters rifle room, due to the limited number of the rifles produced.

My M1910 will only take more than two cartridges if they are very close to original specifications.

I have read many accounts of those who have M1903 (6.5X54MS), M1905 (9x56MS), M1908 (8X56MS), and M1910 (9.5X57MS) which have the same limitation.

Models M1924 and later had a 'guide ring' added to the Schoenauer magazine which allowed for more variance of cartridge profile.
