Some handgun hunts

I would only be comfortable at 30 or so yards. My groups open considerably past that. Poor light would possibly shorten that distance.

I keep scoped revolver shots at or under 100 yards. With a high power contender, 200+ yard shots with a rest are no problem, but I practice them.

Out in the open, nice sunny ( very hot) day. Threw my daypack down, laying prone, 265 yards. Impact was 1” high, full pass thru. 270 grain accubond in a 14” TC G2 Contender in 378GNR

But I much prefer close, with a heavy bullet in a revolver. Here’s the result of a dance that started in Very heavy brush at 16’. 3 quick hits with 300 grain Swift A frames from a FA83, 454. Real sporty!

Bloody hell, hunting a lion with a handgun would get the ticker pumping.

200yds out of a handgun is impressive. The longest distance I practised at was 50m ISSF free pistol discipline, but free pistol and large bore revolvers are entirely different. I shoot a relatively short barrel 3.5" 460S&W revolver (S&W PC 460XVR) and off hand at 25m I'm ok, but past that I struggle and I'm certainly not skilled enough for hunting. It doesn't really matter, it's not legal here anyway.

I do wonder how I'd perform at a longer range with a scope and long barrel and a solid rest.

A quality revolver or single shot, is more accurate than the shooter can hold. I always carry a daypack with my light jacket in it. I threw it down and shot the Zebra at 265, and I knew I had it, as laying prone, the rest was solid. Fortunately from a slightly elevated position.
Same with a Springbok at 240 in the wide open, and that’s a tiny target with a handgun at that range. A Leupold 2.5x8 and a solid rest makes it work. I can’t use a Bipod, I need a Tripod with a handgun.
To me anyway, it adds an extremely fun element to any hunt.

I love Pistol hunting tree rats, Its a my favorite thing to do on weekends.
I used to carry it under the Canadian tuxedo and walk out into the trees in the beginning of the squirrel season. They'd get so pissy and make a racket and gather around. Then it was easy pickings.

With a scoped FA83 in .454, I feel comfortable and very confident to take anything on Earth, except possibly Elephant, Rhino, and Hippo, due to their massive size, but I’m sure it’s been done.

I was fairly well practiced with a 9mm at one point in life and regularly fired at 6" plates to 100 yards. Took a doe at 80 with a G19 and 147gr Golden Saber. That's a stretch I can't make these days.

How did the 9mm perform at that range? Pardon my ignorance but when you say doe, which species are you referring to?

Whitetail deer. About a 150# animal. The bullet passed through oblique broadside. Half inch or better exit. It was a one shot stop.

A Reeder Masterpiece, Eh?

Yes it is. The best thing is it’s on a G2 frame, not an Encore, so I can swing and shoot off hand with it. I used a 375JDJ for years, but sftee looking at thie 378GNR, had to give it a try. Jdj is on a 444 brass, GNR is on a 405 case, so I get 250-400FPS more out of the same size gun. That makes a huge difference on 375 bullet expansion.

Sorry, but I don't follow this train of thought. The Encore is somehow heavy and the G2 is not? I can hold an Encore out at arm's length and I'm not superman.

There was a 1 pound one ounce difference in my original Encore to my newer G2 complete gun. To me at least, that makes a huge difference on a moving target. Neither are heavy, especially compared to a rifle.
