Large Map of African Continent, 1940 edition

Map of Africa, 1940 edition. I ran across this large educational map at a rural schoolhouse museum in Republic County, Kanas. The school closed around 1950.

Very interesting to see that almost every country has changed borders or names in the past 85 years.

Interesting! I’ve always thought that Bechuanaland was a wonderful place name.

Maps like this were still hanging on the walls of my schoolroom in the late fifties and early sixties and Algeria with its three departments was still part of France. On the map you could see how the border of France went over the Mediterranean see and included part of the Sahara. That all was France and not the colonies. These were located further south in the Sudan and Equatorial area. The war was but already heavily underway in Algeria at the time.

Super cool! Id pay quite a bit of money for that map. I'd love to add it to my collection of "things"...

Kinda funny.. Ive spent a pretty substantial amount of time in both the areas listed as Italian East Africa and Anglo-Egyptian Sudan.. but never heard either of them referred to or referenced by either of those names..

I obviously need to plus up on my history of the region..

The maps in the schools were also from the late thirties. In my time, people did not made any more maps because there was unrest everywhere in Africa and the borders were no longer what they were supposed to be.

I have been looking at several period maps of Africa. Probably a bit later like the 60’s as I want my elephant ear painted in that time frame. Then I will put animal pins in it with the gps locations of my trophies.
