577 NE double rifles

Not a .577 double but a bolt gun.

Its a .585 Hubel Express, I did own a .585 Nyati which I did a bit of hunting with using both 650 and 750 gr Woodleigh's. Mate of mine still owns his Nyati, I sold mine to fund the .585 HE.

This will easily drive a 750 gr Woodleigh north of 2500 fps....too much and recoils brutal. I will work up a load that does 2150-2200...tempted to take it on a water buff hunt next year.

I have an RMR I can mount on it ready to go as well.

Built on a Montana PH action, by Bob DeVries of Kudu Services.

If I am to swing a .500 NE double one day this might get sold to help fund it.

I had Mr. Hubel build me a simple bolt gun in 585 Hubel Express on a 1917 action. The gun broke its stock years ago, but I still have it. I have personally tested a 750gr at 2500fps and I won't try that again. I completely forgot I had this gun... perhaps I should have someone make a new stock for it.

Looks pretty stout and short, designed for ease of handling I guess. With lower powder loads and fps how is the recoil? Interesting calibre and rig for sure.
Forgot to add, the bolt size says it all, massive,

The barrel is 23" and yes the Montana PH was a large CRF action, ideal for these applications. The .585 HE just looks like a .458 Lott on steroids.

The only charge load I recall (without looking at my notes) is the 155gr of AR2209 behind the 750gr Woodleigh for 2550 fps.......recoil is significant !

That was the load that shot best, and used by the smith to do the express sites.

I want to find a load that is 2150-2200 fps, 2300 fps at the top end and I think it wont be too bad at that. I'll zero it with the RMR when I get around to it.

Cheers pc3

I primarily just used 577 NE velocity loads for mine. A 750gr bullet at 2050fps will get any job done with penetration to spare. If memory serves me right, the 585 HE has the same internal dimensions as the 577 NE. So, any 577 NE load data should work fine.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
