Both of the Blaser R8s I've hunted with in the UK were threaded and wore a suppressor. I also don't understand why threading isn't ubiquitous on the US barrels. I'd guess most folks who can afford a Blaser can (and have) negotiate(d) the suppressor acquisition process.
Tikkas are terrific rifles. Very accurate and durable for the price point.
But the R8 really is a better mousetrap. I used one extensively while living and hunting in the UK and it will definitely be the next rifle I own. I've sold a Christensen 300 WM and a custom CZ 375 and both will be...
I do like others say here - only one powder on the bench at a time.
I've made one mistake reloading in about 15 years - wrong powder weight (transposed weight for one powder with a different one). Max was supposed to be 38 grains, I loaded 41 accidentally. I knew it when I pulled the trigger -...
I like the idea of DSC moving around, but it does seem odd for "Dallas" Safari Club to hold its convention in Atlanta.
I've lived in Dallas and Atlanta. And several other places. I think Dallas and Atlanta are more similar than different. I tell folks that Dallas is just Atlanta without the...
That's a SilencerCo Hybrid 46 on my 450 BM upper. It definitely tames the BM nicely. It's rated to 338 Lapua and safe on a 375 (confimed). It's not light or short, however.
I plan to shoot 375 H&H suppressed from now on.
Like @Throwback says, definitely consider Europe. I've loved hunting in England for roe, fallow, and muntjac. The rut for roe deer and fallow is a hoot. Calling in muntjac is really fun also.
In no particular order:
Spain for all four species of ibex.
Red deer/stag in Scotland
Roe in England...
My experience with buff is only three animals. I tagged along on two hunts before my first buff hunt in 2021.
Of the two I got to tag along for, I saw one buff shot with a 375 and one with a 416. I much preferred the reaction to the 416 and promptly purchased one (Kimber Caprivi 416 RM) for my...
I've always been intrigued by the 280 and 280 AI. I already own a 7-08 and have always thought a 7RM was a little too much of a good thing. I think the 280/280 AI/284/7x64 is the "right" combo of performance and recoil, especially with 160 grain bullets. If I could only have one 7mm, this would...
We ate zebra on my first safari and I really enjoyed it. Over wood coals on the braai as has been described.
People are weird about zebras - the first timers I'm taking to Limpopo in 2024 don't want to hunt or eat zebra but they are fine with all the other animals. To each his/her own!
One thing to keep in mind - thermals don't see through trees or brush or even through your windshield. So parts of the animal need to be clear of the obstacles for the thermal to pick it up. I'm sure folks already knew this but just in case....
I purchased a thermal handheld (Pulsar Axion) a couple years ago. They are used extensively here in the UK for spotting game during daylight. They are a game changer when stalking. Find a heat source, then swap to the binos for proper identification. You can definitely tell the difference...
I have a Silencerco Harvester 300 and a Silencerco Hybrid 46. I love shooting suppressed. Yes, it adds length and weight but IMHO it is worth it. I became a believer after stalking here in the UK with them.
After using my cans extensively and shooting several others, I'm convinced an over...
Puff adder one of the trackers almost stepped on when tracking buff in 2021 in Limpopo SA.
There was also a puff adder we almost stepped on that was near where my buff fell. Luckily when my buff's buddies came back to try to get him up, one of them stomped on the snake and it was stunned. When...
This is a key downside to using any BDC on a second-focal plane optic. When you change magnification, the distance on the corresponding "hash" on the BDC reticle changes as well. To effectively use a BDC you need to do some homework/use a ballistics app to understand the differences across the...
The Vortex BDC is the only "fussy" reticle I really like. It's pretty simple to use. Vortex formerly offered an excellent ballistics calculator which would work with your reticle but I don't think that's the case these days.
There's a similar reticle from Trijicon I like. I think it's called an...
Fair enough. As an American living in the UK, I'll note that folks of all colors speak about race differently in Europe than we do in the US.
I'll also note that there was a chapter in Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, & Steel that described his theory of why most of the folks on the continent look...
I disagree! I believe he is reading the comments. His original post was inflammatory (my opinion) on purpose, as a few others have said. He's either started this little flamefest as a "hey y'all, watch this" for his buddies or (more likely) to elicit specific comments for use in an upcoming...
Check out the Isotunes Caliber. I have the Sport Advance but it's corded. The Caliber are cordless, bluetooth, enhances ambient sounds, and blocks loud noises like gunshots.
I agree with the OP on the concept that all these 6m to 30 cals have essentially the same trajectory under normal hunting conditions. With a 20 bore, 22LR, 30-06 and a 375 you can hunt almost anything on the planet.
I'll be the outlier here and say I'm not a fan of MPBR. I sight in everything...
I have a RCBS Chargemaster and I really like it. It was a game changer for me in reloading due to speed and ease of use.
It is expensive and there are days where I need 40 throws for 30 "good" ones. But it's easy to just dump the powder back in the hopper and go again. I've done the "throw...
I grew up in NE FL. Spent 25 years in Georgia. 7RM is a lot of gun for the small deer in FL, it's arguably too much for the bigger bodied deer in middle GA as well. But it will work on everything you could encounter. You'll do a lot more sitting in blinds/treestands/high houses than you are used...
My 2021/22 SA experience was similar (rounded):
Animals: Buff, warthog, bushpig, impala, waterbuck. Hunted in May 2021, shipped in June 2022. All Europeans, completed in SA. Had the buff and waterbuck skins tanned into leather and had several items made by a local artisan. Two pairs of vellies...
I have a 6.5x55 SE in one of these Sauers - mine has the beechwood stock. It's a shockingly good rifle for the price.
I've handled the M18 and the Sauer 100 and preferred the 100. Wasn't even close for me.
The only thing I don't like about the Sauer is the plastic bolt knob. It isn't easy to...
Haven't been out for fallow yet - may not be until Oct (rut). But enjoyed several days stalking a couple weeks ago. Rut wasn't really on yet, but this guy was chasing. Looked over at least 20 bucks before we settled on this roebuck. Not very tall, but thick with nice pearling.
I was formerly an OCD-adjacent "extensive barrel break-in and clean thoroughly after each use" camp. Likely a result of US Army training and the aforementioned mild neuroticism. But I can learn...
With more and more practical experience, I've evolved into the other camp. I definitely have...
Since I've never had to do that in ATL despite 2.5 million miles with Delta, I'll take your word for it. But if that's the case, changing terminals in ATL with bags much really, really suck.
I have waited in ATL intl baggage claim for 90 mins to get my rifle case however. You do not want to be...
This is exactly what I did in late April 2021. ATL to DFW, collect bags and re-check with Qatar, back through security, then DOH and JNB. Bags and rifles made it fine. I had to change terminals in DFW which was a pita with rifle case and bags.
