TSX all the way or solids in the mag for buff

In my experience, I put a soft in the chamber followed by all solids regardless of make (Barnes, Swift, etc). What led me to this position was a situation I experienced In 2018 on a cape buffalo hunt. I was using my 458 Lott with 500gr Northfork softs. After the first shot, the bull was...

The Anatomy of a bang flop

Great thoughts and analysis by both Sgt_Zim and Hunter Habib. Over the years I have noticed a general trend that heart shots do not result in an instant "bang-flop" when (1) the overall size of the animal is large (1000lb+) and (2) the heart is not filled with blood when struck by the...

Yes sir....and I used the 570gr Swift A-Frame projectile you recommended and I am glad I did. Your statement that the muscles of a lion are like tire rubber and can be very tough was quickly proven true on the lioness I hunted. After 1.5 days of tracking her, she popped up at 60 yards and...

    Reloading for a double rifle

I have limited experience reloading for a double rifle. I shoot a Heym 89B 500 Nitro Express and have loaded softs and solids from Swift and Barnes. I obviously cannot speak for other brands of rifles (or for that matter even another Heym rifle) but I have discovered a general trend for my...

    Reinventing the typical trophy photo

Fantastic picture! Love the dog in it. I bet that dog was thinking the following about the animal: "I'M ON HIM....IF HE MOVES I'LL BITE HIM!"

    Is south africa reasonably safe?

I've been to South Africa 9 times and have traveled by car all over the country....never had a single issue or actual danger on any of the trips. Was just there for two weeks this month....no issues. Of course you must stay aware during your trip and if something is uncomfortable then tell...

    What have you eaten?

I've done african lion, rhino, and croc among others. The lion was surprisingly tender and juicy. Interesting thing about lion is that it turns white like chicken when you grill it. The rhino was also tender and tasty...had its own unique flavor. The croc tasted like fish to me.

    Reinventing the typical trophy photo

In addition to the "typical" trophy photos, I like to get pictures of the rifle and/or ammunition with the harvested animal...some from different angles and others closeup...some with me in the pic and others not. Here are a few from my trip this month....two cape buffalo, two lions and a rhino.

I love my Steyr SM12 8x68S....I run 180gr Northfork SS in it. I am currently headed to Africa and can share my load details with you when I return if you like. I have not taken much with the 8x68S except a Croc but I certainly will in the near future.

I have a bunch of reloaded ammo. I’m taking the africa. Does it need to be in factory boxes?

I keep mine in MTM boxes that are then inside a small pelican case which I then lock using two combo-locks. I've never had any issue in any of the countries I've been in. In fact, I literally just locked up my ammo box and stuffed it in my checked bag....headed to Africa in the morning with my...

    Wanted 500 NE brass

I shoot a 500NE and in my personal experience Norma brass is much better than Hornady in at least two respects: (1) Norma primer pockets are tighter and last longer, and (2) Norma brass resizes perfectly whereas I have had numerous pieces of Hornady brass that spring back and refuse to take the...

What do you do for a living?

As stated repeatedly (and correctly) above by wiser men, to travel the world and hunt the game you desire takes focus, planning, hustling, and (for most of us) saving money monthly, regardless of your occupation. Do those things and you will see and hunt the world. I personally started out...

Another long-awaited dream has finally come to fruition. The 6.5x68S has fascinated me since I first read about the cartridge 25+ years ago, so I ordered one through Heym in the SR30 Grand Royal model. The engraving is done in the Germanic oak leaf pattern and all the animals engraved on the...

Rizzini Rhino Express 470NE Cracked Wood

Here is my personal experience with Rizzini double rifles. I had a new Rizzini 500 Nitro Express and the rifle kept doubling even with light practice loads. The forearm would also come off at times under recoil. The rifle had to be sent back to Rizzini USA (Fierce) twice and both times I was...

So you think you need to own a Stopping Rifle...

Excellent point. It reminds me that I take a 15-lb kettle bell when I go on walks around the neighborhood. I swap the kettle bell into the opposite hand as each arm gets tired during the walk. This simulates carrying a double rifle in Africa.

So you think you need to own a Stopping Rifle...

In giving additional thought to the OP’s question, it occurred to me that we as hunters probably overlook what could be a really important factor in making a decision about how large of a DG cartridge we use (or can use)….and that is how fit and in-shape our bodies are when shooting. We spend...

    Premium bullets needed for PG?

In my judgment and experience, a premium bullet on PG is a must. I've used Northforks, A-Frames, Barnes, and Hammers and I've had tremendous success with all of them. On my trip last year the Hammer Hunter bullet out of a 275 Rigby saved me on the biggest Kudu I've ever taken (62"). It was a...
