    Ticks

Soak all pants and shirts in permethrin rinse before your trip - as stated above, just follow the directions. Additionally, I use the Repel wipes every morning before getting dressed - whole body (except the under carriage). Then spray bottom of pants legs, and waistline with spray. Tons of...

    270 ammo??

Either of those should be fine I like the 150 A frame in my 270 - worked excellent on everything including kudu. I also loaded and used 150 partitions - same outcome. I’m taking my 30-06 and 375 this July for another trip. Will be using 180 gr oryx in the 30-06, I haven’t used this bullet...

    Heck of a gift

That’s a generous and excellent gift! I’d throw a nice 3-9 scope on there and use as is - maybe add a little more character on your hunt. I used 150 gr A frames in my 270 on my last safari - excellent results and wouldn’t hesitate to use that same setup again

    Scope Setting for Cape Buffalo?

I’ve only shot one buff - it was at 40 yards and I had my scope on 1x the entire time. Second shot was at 12 yards - still on 1x. From what little I know about DG, your PH will most likely try to get you within 50 yards for initial shot. I too like the option of 6x for a 100 yard shot

    Rifle for daughter

I’d suggest one of the following: Win 70 featherweight $1000 range Kimber select $1500 range Sako 85 $1500-$1800 range Custom Mauser $2000+ As for caliber I’d go with one of the following - 270, 308, 30-06

    Whitetail Hunt 2024

I’d like to make it to Canada for a hunt - might do that next year. Have a safari this July/Aug so I’m limited on vacation time and fun money - was looking for a closer to home trip for ‘24

    Whitetail Hunt 2024

Good evening all, I’m looking for a good place to book a whitetail hunt for this fall, was thinking of Kansas but not stuck on exactly there. Ideally somewhere within 10-12 hour drive of southern Missouri. If you have any outfitter recommendations I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank...

What tricks to put on light weight 416 rem mag to help reduce recoil

Some good advice above - second comments from @rookhawk load development, Weight of the rifle, good recoil pad, low rings/bases and for me a proper fit (I’m 6’1) and find most heavier recoiling rifles fit better and have less felt recoil with a 1” spacer adding a bit more length and allowing a...

Any minimum calibers for the largest of plains game?

Agree with the above - 338 is more than enough - I too suggest one bullet weight with a premium bullet. Swift, Barnes, woodleigh, etc…

    Opinions please: Pros/Cons of .375 Ruger vs .375 H&H

I wanted a good all weather brush gun so I bought a fair condition sako AV Fiberclass 375H&H for $1,000. Took it to the gunsmith, cut the barrel down to 21” and got it cerakoted ($50 barrel cut and crown and $300 cerakote). Threw rings and a scope on it and it comes in under 10lbs with scope...

    300 PRC

Congrats on your upcoming hunt. As mentioned above - most places will not allow you to hunt buff with a .30 cal. I’m sure it could do the job but not an ideal caliber. I don’t have a 300 PRC but I was under the impression that the main reason the PRC was built was to shoot heavier bullets than...

.270 for plains game? Should I be scrapping it?

A few years back I compared the energy of med size hunting calibers - for my purposes I chose to look at what cartridges would be sufficient for hunting given the minimum numbers I was looking for. I want a 150 grain bullet or larger at 1,500 fps for proper penetration and expansion on medium...

.270 for plains game? Should I be scrapping it?

My preferred shot is near side heart and break opposite shoulder. Aframes do not disappoint and I never recovered a bullet. Took a near side shoulder shot on a hartebeest at 200 yards (that’s what I had to work with) - broke both shoulders with a complete pass through. My concern is not really...

.270 for plains game? Should I be scrapping it?

My last safari I used a 270 with 150 grain A frames - excellent results with everything up to and including Kudu. (Kudu, hartebeest, wildebeest, waterbuck) More than enough gun for what you are hunting. I would use it on eland - but wouldn’t suggest a quartering shot

Phones for gifts to African friends

Thanks nhoro - these won’t be for tips - just gifts. I learned what happens to binos / knives when given as tips on my first trip. I actually might see if I can scoot around to some camps after hunters leave to buy up some good gear super cheap

Phones for gifts to African friends

They have factory unlocked or network unlocked options to buy. I will hit the google machine and see what the difference is. Phones for gifts to African friends

Good morning all, Hoping for some insight as to what key features / requirements are needed for phones in South Africa. I am going to take a few phones for presents but want to make sure what I take can actually be used in RSA. I’m pretty sure they aren’t used on a network plan -...

Does the perfect fixed blade for Africa exist? Whether it does or not, what should it look like?

I have a pile of nice hunting knives - none were used in Africa - but I can tell you what every skinner I saw used… a $0.99 cheap ass plastic handle, flimsy junk metal blade. And they made my skinning skills look pathetic in comparison.

Favourite quotes - Here's mine, Quite a long list. What's yours?

I’ve got three quotes that I read over the years that always stuck with me. Quote by Babe Ruth: “It's hard to beat a person who never gives up“ Sun Tzu wrote, “Tactics without strategy are the noise before defeat.” I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what...

    Valmet 412s .308 Double Rifle

That’s a great setup! It’s less about the cost of the rifle and more about the hunt. Take it and have a great time - many hunters would love to have that setup. And the regulation looks good to me

    Offhand vs. Sticks

I’ve been hunting a long time - like most here, and if there is something around to help steady a shot and improve my odds I’ll take it. If the ph has sticks readily available I’ll use them. Last safari I didn’t have sticks - I can shoot offhand just fine but I do recall several shots I wish I...

    Hi from Scotland

Welcome! Scotland is one of my favorite countries - been quite a few years since I’ve been but I’m heading over there next year. The 375HH is a stellar cartridge - I prefer to shoot a 300 gr Swift A Frame. What is on the list for your Safari?

Buy a rifle or sell the ammo??

I’ve bought new rifles just because I had a couple boxes of that ammo laying around - if you’ve got $1k plus in ammo….. I say buy the Ruger and then get a H&H - always good to have options

    Tick clothes spray

I soaked my shirts and pants in permethrin - then hang dry, first wash separate from everyday clothes, hang dry. There are directions on the bottle. Actual hunting days I would use a deep woods off wipe. Wipe down (on skin) arms, legs, mid section around waistline. Was crawling through the...

Laymen: what have they asked you?

Questions I usually get are 1. What happens to the meat and can you bring it back. 2. What rifles are you taking? The only sex I’d be having is if I ran into Charlize while she’s back home visiting and she threw herself at me. I’d say the odds are pretty good there will be no shenanigans on...

Which Action For custom Dangerous Game Build

@Downandlow - it’s your dream and your money so you can get about anything built. If I were going to build a custom rifle and budget was not an issue I’d probably go with a Granite Mountain. Caliber selection - not sure I’d go with a short mag but again, it’s your build. Personally I’d choose...

Suitable versatile Rifle types for mixed Bag

can’t go wrong with a model 70. Also Ruger (a bit heavy but I like them) and Kimber (talkeetna, Caprivi and BGR) have good 375s. I realize it’s not usually possible to shoot a used custom rifle before purchase but ideally that would be the route before buying a custom 98 to assess feeding...
