    Hunting opportunities near Melbourne?

Hi mate Your best option for hunting near Melbourne in June will be sambar deer. They're tough hunting in mountainous country, but if you're up for a challenge they're a fantastic game species. It'll still be a couple of hours drive to get into good country. There's public land (with permit) or...

Trophy Water Buffalo Hunt Australia - Arnhem Land

A highly recommended hunt folks. I've been fortunate to hunt this amazing concession twice. It's massive, untouched country with fantastic game numbers, and Big Country are a quality outfit.

Big Game Hunting Australia - BIG COUNTRY SAFARIS AUSTRALIA

Welcome aboard Alex, great to have you on this excellent forum. For any members interested in hunting in Australia, look no further than Big Country Safaris. In my opinion they've well and truly earned the right to call themselves Australia's premier big game outfitter, although Alex is more...

Hunt over water; Shoot from truck

I've done four safaris now and haven't shot anything out of a truck or blind. Not my cup of tea. But nothing against anyone else - it's your money, your hunting ethics, and your story to tell. Just be resolute in how you wish to hunt and clear in your communication.

    Question On Heart Shots

This Red stag was a heart shot, complete bang-flop at 270m. Dead in his tracks. Not a mark on him externally, but massive internal damage from the 135gn Atomic 29 copper bullet in my 7mmRM. I put it down to the heart being empty or full when hit, as of course most heart shots will run a bit...

    Namibia Taxidermist, Trophaendienste

They most certainly have, thank you. Although I'm yet to venture back to Namibia. One day, perhaps. I am glad you had a much better experience and are happy with the results. Good hunting.

    Reloading for Dangerous Game

I reload for everything, including the DG hunts I've done. I'm pretty cautious anyhow with a good system of checks, but will admit I go to a few extra lengths with DG loads to ensure consistency.

    Namibia Taxidermist, Trophaendienste

Cheers mate. If you follow to the end of that thread, you'll see photos of a much more recent batch of tanned capes. Unfortunately, nothing has improved from where I sit. I cannot and will never recommend anybody to use their services. As I mentioned in that thread, in Australia we have the...

Yes, still have it mate, hopefully it'll have a date with some sambar later this year on a walk in hunt.

Make it a rum and I'm sold ;) That 6.5 would be a cracking cartridge.

    Most Iconic Animal of Oceania?

Banteng for me. A special animal in a special place. But more people would probably say our Water Buffalo, or locals might say Sambar. I'll also second the posters mentioning free-range Tahr, one of the most challenging hunts anywhere.

    Any .350 Rem Mag Fans?

Love my Ruger 77 Mk. II .350RM. It wears a 2-7 Kahles scope in Warne mounts. Loaded with 225 or 250gn Woodleigh PP's, it's been great on camels, sambar, pigs and a range of smaller stuff.

    Hunting wild cattle/bovines...

Those were all late season hunts around September. So it's extremely hot & humid. Water has dried up to only permanent pools. It can be thirsty work, but a very rewarding time to hunt if you can hack it!

    Hunting wild cattle/bovines...

Our Australian water Buffalo are big, heavy animals with no natural predators. So they'll typically stand their ground, or if something takes their interest, they'll actually come in for a look. With the wind right, they are reasonably easy to stalk. But they are equally tough to kill and can...

    Hunting wild cattle/bovines...

I think anyone who enjoys Bovine hunting must put Banteng on the list. They are a special hunt in a fantastic wilderness area. And of course, we have Water Buffalo and Scrub Bulls as well, both fun to hunt and the Scrubbers can get pretty exciting ;) Water buff are inquisitive by nature which...

Hunting with dangerous game cartridges outside of Africa?

I've used my .375H&H and .458WM quite a bit here in Australia on our big game, including Buffalo, Scrub Bulls, and Banteng. I'd consider the 338 or 9.3 as a sensible minimum for these animals, stalking mature bulls on foot. But the bigger cals certainly work well.

    Eastern Cape April Vs July

I'd go in July. In fact, I'll be back in the EC in August. Qantas is the only logical flight choice unfortunately. We overnight in Sydney, allow plenty of time in the morning with Border Force etc, then overnight in Joburg as well, using a permit service to clear our rifles. Any questions...

Shout Out to Bell and Carlson!

Good to hear. I have two of their Medallist stocks, on my 458WM and 7mmRM. While they may not be classic walnut, they've been 100% reliable and they fit me well.

SOUTH AFRICA: ZIMBABWE: Mark & Tim's Big Bull Safari With KMG Hunting Safaris

    When to book a hunt

If I already had flights booked, I'd be wanting the hunt booked asap. In fact, that's the opposite of how I usually go about it. May is also the busy rut period for many species, I'd think most reputable outfitters would be booked out already. Personally, I'd vet the outfit on AH and get it...

DIY Australia?? Is it possible for an American?

About the only real public land hunting opportunity is for Sambar deer in Victoria's Alpine country. Its quite challenging mountain hunting. You certainly can't just hire a car and drive around shooting Buffalo. Disregard those inflated SCI Buffalo prices. In my opinion the best Buffalo...

AUSTRALIA: Back Country Hunt - NT Australia

Very well said. Sadly, there are plenty of dodgy operators up there, and many clients wouldn't even know the difference. Two questions to ask - Do they hold a Corporate Firearm Licence to be able to legally run Safaris? And do they have a section 19 or other relevant agreement to run safari...

Aside from Africa, what are some memorable guided hunts around the world that rival the experience of an African Safari?

I truly believe that anyone who enjoys Africa, and remote untouched places in general, would love Australia's Northern Territory. A hunt for Buffalo, Scrub Bull, Banteng and Boar is right up there. Like Africa, choosing the right outfitter is essential. New Zealand offers some remarkable...

a lithgow .303 rifle joined my collection, it took a while to find a good one.

Very nice pick up! I was lucky enough to inherit my Dads '42 Lithgow. All matching, but he did refinish the stock many years back, leaving it a bit too glossy. But it still shoots great with mild handloads with 160gn Atomic 29 bullets.

Thanks Gents, appreciate it. I know a guy, but he won't get to them for about 4 years. And his alcohol bill sucks! ;) The Buff capes are something else. Over an inch thick and super tough. One must score them heavily to get salt penetration, and it's tough work in the heat. We usually brine...
