    45/70

Thats interesting. I think most of the lost animals were shot with hornady and barnes 300gr. Very likely could have been bullet failure. I know a lot of guys have good luck with hot reloads but I can't speak to it.

    45/70

People love the 45/70 and I just don't get it. Seems like every time we don't recover a wounded animal it was shot with a 45/70. Anyone else have that experience?

3.5 12ga vs big bore rifle

I can't preach it enough but a shock eater shooting pad does wonders and it's thin enough that you won't notice it. I wore one in my undershirt while using a 470 and never bruised. I don't have any affiliation with them in any way but I had excellent results. I would say a 9.3X74R double gun...

    44 mag suppressed??

Out of curiosity why the 44mag? I would think a 357 would yield similar results but give the option for 38 practice or the 300blk for quiet and similar distances. I love a 44 mag but why does it stand out to you?

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

A small thing but with a shorter bolt I don't have to lift my head from the stock to cycle the bolt. The standard length 375H&H and 416 Rigby bolt hits my nose and lifting my head to cycle slows the process quite a bit. Additionally, I only stand 5'8 and the guide gun (while ugly) fits me and...

I'm late to the party but if you're still looking for options look no further. I use a rest from trifectahandgun with a cheap ($30) monopod. The owner of the company is awesome and the product is exactly what a mobile handgun hunter wants. I know for a fact I'm minute of squirrel from 75...

    The Big Bore Dilemma

I have been nipped by a 25-06 and have shot a 416 comfortably. Sometimes the shoulder weld isn't quite right. I will admit that a 470 is just beyond my level of recoil tolerance. Then I found shockeater recoil pads. They don't mess up your LOP and they dissipate recoil like nothing else. I...

    Cheap Rifles and Hypocrisy

Funny you should ask. Yes, Mississippi would. In fact, I tried on out last year. You could also use a 45-70, 444 Marlin, 460 S&W, etc. A slug gun, single shot 35Rem, or 44Mag are also popular choices. I agree that it is not primitive in the least, but this is Mississippi. I typically use a...

    Cheap Rifles and Hypocrisy

Say what you will about cheap rifles of many varieties but it just doesn't take that much to kill a deer. I shot one a couple of years back with a traditions trapper pistol. 20 grains of powder and a 50 cal round ball killed it immediately. Mississippi counts smokeless powder guns during...

If I had it to do again I would probably save the money on taxidermy and go with photos. They are a pain to move and they are very expensive. I could have done a plains game hunt for the cost of the taxidermy.

    Nico van Rooyen Taxidermy, Pretoria

I had a wonderful experience working with them but be very clear what you want. My buffalo was blind in one eye and they took the extra time to hand paint the eyeball smoky blue just like it actually looked. My warthog and baboon also came out excellent. One of my buddies wanted a leather...

    Any Ruger No 1 experts?

I have no excuse and thus the frustration. I’m 33, I’m in pretty decent shape, and I have a 375, a 416, and a 470 that I have never complained about. When the first round popped me I was pretty offended. Must have got me just right in an awkward position off of bags. I’m not usually recoil...

    Any Ruger No 1 experts?

I concede. My neighbor and his boy both shot it today and said it was gentle. Given the truly fantastic bruise on my shoulder I can only conclude that it must have hit me just right on the first shot and the rest of them were just further insult. Just one of those weird things I guess.
  46. CD24

    Any Ruger No 1 experts?

Well english is english. I never said a light loaded 25 kicks like a .416. I said one is a crack and one is a shove and I prefer the shove. If you like the your recoil sharp you should buy yourself a nice ruger 1 in 25-06 I suppose. I know where there might be one for sale someday soon.
  47. CD24

    Any Ruger No 1 experts?

Call me crazy but I'm telling you it was sharp. My shoulder is pretty tender today after 12 rounds off the bench. The recoil pad is pretty firm but I didn't think it would matter that much with such a light bullet. A 115Gr bullet going 2600fps isn't even 7mm-08 power. I would never put a kid...

    Any Ruger No 1 experts?

Funny you should say that. I finally got the scope mounted and level and happily went to the range to sight in my new to me Ruger 1 that will be very gentle in the shoulder and will shoot flat as a pancake. It does, in fact, shoot flat as a pancake. It is not, however, gentle in the shoulder...
