John Rigby & Co and Rhino Habitat project

How wonderful! Robin and Pauline have worked so hard and with such dedication to make a dream come true with the Rhino Habitat. Hooray for John Rigby & Co!! Twelve people will own 12 very special rifles. And saw where Robin will be at the SCI Conference next week. Anyone else have his latest...

In memoriam - Legendary Hunter & Conservationist Tony Dyer passes away

Yesterday I learned the sad news that Tony Dyer, whose family is a legend in Kenya, died at his home at Ngare Ndare on July 3rd. His dear wife Rose died on February 6th this year. Those of you interested in the legendary professional hunters in East Africa will know that Tony served as...

    Famous African Professional Hunters

Lawrence, I'd be happy to email you the group photograph. I did know your uncle - he popped into the EAPHA offices from time to time when between safaris. I have a collection of books written by some of the professional hunters I knew back then and I'll have a look through them to see if I can...

    Robert von Reitnauer Professional Hunter

Hi, Foxi. Yes I did meet her. Quite a remarkable woman - at home in the bush and a gracious and sophisticated hostess in the city. Thanks for sharing the photos.

    Robert von Reitnauer Professional Hunter

Good to hear from you, Wheels, and to learn that you saw Bwana Reitnauer. But disconcerting to discover that the phone number has been disconnected. The quote from E. Echols is very poignant.

    Robert von Reitnauer Professional Hunter

I was researching for some information and came across a copy of Robert's book, Kwaheri!, which eventually led me back to the Africa Hunting site. I was so happy to discover this article. I once spent a lovely Sunday afternoon with Robert and his wife at their home in Nairobi. I remember...

    Famous African Professional Hunters

I'll dig through the albums to see. Living there I just sort of took so much for granted and didn't take too many photos, although I visited most of them. Lots of personal photos, but nothing historical - except to me :) . But I'll definitely dig to see what I can find!

    Famous African Professional Hunters

Some went to South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, too. And that's a neat picture of the Zimmerman display window - thank you for sharing! Can understand why you were/are ticked off at them. Rowland Wards was closer - just around the corner from the New Stanley House where the EAPHA offices...

    Trophies Of Yesteryear

It was such a tragedy. I only met her a couple of times but she was such a nice person - so warm and friendly and well-liked and respected. Her ex husband, Prince (Alfie) von Auersperg, was in a car accident and remained in a coma for years as well - although not as long.

    Famous African Professional Hunters

And here's a photo that was taken for a magazine article about that dinner dance where Tony received the Shaw & Hunter trophy. The man talking with me is Mike Higginson - he wrote wrote the article "What Price Game Skins Today" in the IPHA Magazine. Mike was the executive officer of both the...

    Famous African Professional Hunters

When I was digging around for a couple more photos of that dinner/dance under Trophies of Yesteryear I unearthed my copy of the first edition of the International Professional Hunters' Association magazine published in April 1971. There are some amazing stories written by some amazing people...

    Trophies Of Yesteryear

That particular dinner dance was held at the casino that was opened that year. It had big ball room facilities so they broke tradition that time and held the event there. I do have a couple more photos. Will dig them out and convert so I can post them. Probably by Monday. Glad the history...

    Trophies Of Yesteryear

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum for sharing this, but looking at the trophies members have shared reminded me of the Shaw & Hunter Trophy. In 1970 Tony Seth-Smith won the Shaw & Hunter Trophy for a magnificent lion. The skull measured 14 1/8" by 9" wide. I'm attaching a picture of...

Goeie dag, Adriaan! And baie dankie. :) I lived in South Africa for 18 years - in Cape Town. Did you know Laddie Wincza and Steve Smith (ex Kenya PHs now sadly no longer here)? Knew they went to Joburg. But it was awhile ago. When I lived in Nairobi I was invited to the reception when...

Thank you! :) You are correct - not all the members were at that meeting. It was a busy season! I haven't heard from Brian Herne recently and have been meaning to follow up. He was in California. Last I heard Tony Dyer and Rose were still on Borana.

EAPHA AGM in Nairobi Kenya in 1971

Here's a photograph I thought I would also share on this thread. It's a group photo taken after the EAPHA AGM in Nairobi in 1971. I took the minutes! Last year Robin Hurt helped me verify some of the names. Think I'm the only one who kept the photo. Missing from the photo: Syd Downey, Donald...

Thank you for the welcome, Christina! Among my favorite books are For the Honour of a Hunter by Tony Seth-Smith, A Woodpecker Calls on the Right by Terry Mathews, White Hunters by Brian Herne, and Hunting the Big Five by Robin Hurt. Downey's Africa is another good read. Stan Bleazard wrote...

    Ahmed The Elephant Of Marsabit

And about those tusks at the Nairobi station ... I thought of something else and have reached out to an acquaintance who remembers reading more about them somewhere. This might take a bit more time, but I'll get back to you as soon as I hear from him!

This is so funny - I was going to post the same photo in my response to Bob a few minutes ago when I mentioned the bookcase with the amazing history! This was taken before I worked for the association. Starting in the center: and going left to right: Tony Dyer, not sure but will find out...

    Ahmed The Elephant Of Marsabit

Did some digging as promised. George Adamson was indeed the game warden for Marsabit for quite some time. However, Stan Bleazard was appointed the game warden in 1960 and took on the responsibilities of both the Marsabit and Moyale districts - a range of about 33,000 square miles. Stan said...

    Ahmed The Elephant Of Marsabit

Steve said Peter Jenkins, the Game Warden then, asked the game scouts about Ahmed and was told they hadn't seen him for two or three days. They went looking for him and discovered the body. Interestingly the bullet in Ahmed's stomach was the same caliber as that used by rifles issued to game...

Ahmed's demise was further reported in a passage of the book The Hunter and the Go-Away Bird written by Steve Smith, a well-know professional hunter in Kenya who later moved to South Africa, where he headed Rowland Ward Publications. According to Steve, Ahmed had not been seen for two or three...
