    Market for .450/.400 double?

I have a stash of DGX from a couple years ago, but I haven't seen any recently. DGS is more than plentiful on the internet now, and it's never disappointed me while facing down a herd of angry gallon jugs. I'll have custom handloads made for when I have to fire it with bad intentions.

    Market for .450/.400 double?

It gives a healthy shove but not a hammer. I'd take it over a 7mm mag any day! I've only shot it off-hand using a kind of Mike Tyson stance. I wouldn't welcome bench shooting it.

I haven't weighed it, but specs say 9 lbs, 7 oz. Thanks for the tip on the sling!

    Market for .450/.400 double?

Thus far I haven't had much trouble hitting gallon jugs at 50 yards with the irons, but the jugs aren't trying to kill me. Realistically I need to admit to myself that a red dot is the wiser course for my eyes when the hooves are coming for my liver.

    Market for .450/.400 double?

I'm embarrassed that I never posted an update here. Apologies to all, especially those who were so generous with their detailed advice. I decided to go the safest route and bought a brand new Chapuis in .450/400 from J.J. himself. Wonderful to deal with, and he got the LOP right on the money...

    Today's pick, Subject to Change

It’s landowner deer season here now (and open season on coyote) so at the moment it’s: .45-70 (Marlin 1895 SBL) .30-06 (pre-War Model 70 — only when there’s NO chance of rain) .45 Colt (Ruger stainless Bisley, occasionally Winchester (Miroku) 92)

    .357 Magnum for bear defense

Not a huge sample size, but this survey strikes me as instructive: https://www.ammoland.com/2018/02/defense-against-bears-with-pistols-97-success-rate-37-incidents-by-caliber/#axzz63yzA9UuO Note also the instances of "spray failed." But, we don't know anything about the quality of the spray...

    Market for .450/.400 double?

Some of the issues you mention seem to potentially be of particular concern regarding the .450/.400. By Boddington's account, development of the modern Hornady load involved a judgment call on bore diameter because the originals were not standardized. This would give me pause in considering an...

    Market for .450/.400 double?

Thank you all for the detailed and thoughtful replies. The thought of 1/3 of used doubles having a problem is pretty eye-popping, and crucial to note.

    Market for .450/.400 double?

I’d prefer ejectors, but it wouldn’t be a deal-breaker on the right rifle at the right price. The Merkel that I mentioned, which I’m using as my benchmark, has ejectors.

    Market for .450/.400 double?

Greetings all, I'm in the market for a SxS double in .450/.400. Right now I'm keeping an eye on a new Merkel Model 140-2 listed on Guns International for $11,995, but before I pull the trigger(s) I was hoping to get a sense of the market for similar rifles at or below that price. I've not had...

Courteney Selous boots from African Sporting Creations

Hello All, I just received my Courteney Selous boots from @African Sporting Creations and wanted to provide a few quick impressions for those who are considering these. -Sizing: I normally wear a 9 wide in US sizing, and Danner typically fits me best. I indicated this to ASC, and they sent...

    THE KING

I have 30rds of it if you're interested. FWIW, I know of at least one pre-64 Model 70 in .375 that had its barrel shot out. A local dentist inherited it from his father, and both traveled the world hunting everything with that rifle. He didn't keep a round count but guessed it at over 10,000.

    458 Winchester Magnum

My barber’s father and brother both worked their entire careers at Winchester in New Haven. The father had long since passed away, but I did have a couple of long conversations with the brother about his time there (which ran up to the mid ‘80s). More than once he talked of their record keeping...

    Rifle markings and importation issues?

I suspect my friend may have had something like this in mind when he cautioned me. He bow hunts in Africa and was likely going from a half-formed impression. Thanks much to all who responded.

    Rifle markings and importation issues?

I think that's probably the case more often than not. I don't have reason to believe that Winchester ever serialized its barrels. I wouldn't think twice about it, except for the "TIA" bit that I keep hearing about -- and the warnings of a friend who has hunted there.

    Rifle markings and importation issues?

I have a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 .375H&H that has been rebarrelled. The original serial number is in place on the receiver and has been hand etched into the bolt. The barrel, however, is unmarked except for caliber. I have been warned that the lack of original factory markings on the barrel...

    Hunting with cast lead bullets

I found a good discussion on The High Road handgun forum regarding the Buffalo Bore monometal DG round from May of this year. Some of those guys did some testing of the ammo at the "bovine bash" (I had no idea that was a thing) and reported outstanding results (those same fellows hunt Cape...

    Hunting with cast lead bullets

Given your experience with this bullet testing project, do you have any thoughts on the Garrett 540gr hardcast vs. the Buffalo Bore Dangerous Game 380gr monometal, both in .45-70, for thick-skinned DG? I don't handload so I'm studying all my factory options. Thanks!

Whitetail deer, boar, black bear, coyote, rabbit and squirrel. I use a Ruger 10/22 on rabbit and squirrel, but I've used a bit of everything on the rest. My go-to, though, is my Marlin 1895 SBL .45-70, mainly because it fits me very well and I know I can shoot it! I'd love if my wife took up a...
