Winchester "recent" Model 70 Featherweight 7x57 twist rate?

You could check the rate of twist yourself. For the "push feed" series the rate of twist should be 8.25" according to Shooters Bible 1985-No 76 page 249 Specifications table I have one of the push feed series. Haven't played with it a huge amount. It likes the PRVI 140gr BTSP's (max charge of...

    7x57 for big game

Gotcha! Wish I could use a suppressor (correct terminology LOL) as we are governed by his eminence Sir Buffoon Head currently, and apparently I have no identity as we are all "Peoplekinds" according to, cough, "him", but I digress. Now back to our regularly scheduled foruming

    7x57 for big game

In open areas where I hunt I would go with the 140gr bullets, heavier cover either the 160gr or 175gr range of bullets. I have several 7x57's so each likes it's own load. Where I hunt it's mostly whitetail & black bear. Once in a while you get a lost moose or elk.

    7x57 for big game

100% agree. I might throw in the Woodleigh 160 & 175 gr series of bullets as well. As many know Mr. Bell dispatched a multitude of pachyderms with the 7x57.

    Which caliber over .458

I've seen multiple hunting video's of Cape Buffalo hunts. They have been shot with a multitude of calibres. Most shots were good, some not so much to the chagrin of the PH. Yes CB's are tough but any animal that wants to live can make things "interesting" no matter how well the shot was or how...

    7mmstw federal

Think I might go with Nosler loaded with Nosler Accubonds over Federal. Just personal preference. Great calibre but as stated availability of ammo might pose an issue in different parts of the world.

    Which .416 Rigby?

I have a CZ 550 Classic in 416 Rigby. With 400gr bullets it shoots 3 shot cloverleafs at 100yds. I have a Nikon 1-4x20 with German #4 reticle on it. The only thing that it has hunted, sort of, was a groundhog at 20yds.

    Which caliber over .458

Valid points. To each his own I guess. All depends on the shooter and ones ability to shoot effectively.

  11. 8x68

    Which caliber over .458

Question would be: Why do you want bigger (besides because I can)? If it was me I would stick with the 458 cal and look at a 450 Rigby (which I have). A 505 would be nice, and for what the heck's sake a 577 Tyrannosaur, but the 450 Rigby will kill things just as dead.

    8x68S vs 300 Wea Magnum

The 24" barrel length for the 8x68S & 300WBY will work just fine. Considering the BRNO 602 in 8x68 is 25" you only lose approx 100fps. The Weatherby Vanguard in 300WBY series has a 24" barrel (I have both calibres myself). Again you only lose about 100fps. I think you should keep what you have...

    Techniques for heavy recoiling rifles

Good info. I will add that I was taught that your positioning wants to be like the main sail on a sail boat. Shoulder over top of your front foot, and rear foot should be at or slightly back of rear shoulder. Front foot is the balance pivot, rear foot is the brace. Shooting shoulder forward as...

    35 Whelen

I had my 35 Whelen in a Rem 700 Classic out at the range the other day. It really likes the Sierra 225gr Spitzer's. Shoots 5 shot sub MOA groups at 100yds. It also likes the Speer 250gr HCSP's. Again 5 shot cloverleafs. I haven't tried any of the "Premium" brand bullets (Nosler, North Fork...

    450 Rigby vs 460 Weatherby

I forgot to add that in this part of the world we have something called moose. It would make a good moose load from 150-300yds. Given that the round would be going around 2100fps at 200yds and 1700fps at 300 yds (which rival 45/70 muzzle velocities for the same bullet) it would make a good long...

    450 Rigby vs 460 Weatherby

There's always a point to something. I was just messing around. 550gr bullets are a tad heavy in my opinion. 500gr is enough bullet for the 450 Rigby. Another 50 grains doesn't really gain you anything except more recoil.

    35 Whelen

I use Speer 250gr HCSP in my Rem 700 Whelen for non open areas that I hunt. I have them travelling around 2450fps. Really loves them. More open areas I use IMR 4895 & Sierra 225gr Spitzer's. 5 shot groups at 100yds are 0.75". I tried a 10 shot string as well and it measured 1.75". 200yds was a...

    8X68s revisited

    450 Rigby vs 460 Weatherby

When I was researching reloading data for my 450 (not much available in North America so I contacted PH's & Game Wardens in various parts of Africa). Karl Stumpfe basically said you have a 460 Weatherby minus about 6%. That's what I based my load data on. This is a bit off topic. Hope its OK...

    7mm STW

Well I sold the Remington because I found myself a Win M70 Classic in 7mm STW. I had preferred the Mauser action to start with but couldn't find one. M70 Safari Express 416 Rem or cz 550 416 Rigby

You may need to mount the rear ringmount (if installing a scope) just forward of the pop up sight. I had to do this on my BRNO 600 in 7x57. If the ringmount was installed directly over the pop up sight the bolt either would not open in the closed position, or close in the open position. Nice...

M70 Safari Express 416 Rem or cz 550 416 Rigby

Agree with a several posters here. M70 is a beautiful rifle, the CZ is a robust rifle. Fit and finish of the M70 is better IMO. Too bad the M70 isn't currently available in 416 Rigby. I have both the Win M70 Alaskan series in 338WM, and a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby. I have yet to have any feed issues...

The guy I bought it from had it sitting in his safe. He said he really never did anything with it. 450 Rigby vs 416 Rigby

I have both calibres in a CZ 550. They both shoot lest than an inch from the bench (I used a Leadsled. I forgot it one day and fired 10 rounds from the 450 Rigby from the bench. You don't want to fire 10 rounds from the bench with a 450 Rigby without using something to reduce the pounding your...

    Anyone have a CZ 527 7x62x39?

I had one. Shot Hornady 123gr SST's under a MOA at 100yds. It was a fun, accurate little rifle UNLESS you tried to single feed without use of the magazine. The short version of story is that the extractor would disengage from the extractor collar when you lifted the bolt handle to eject the...
