Old, hell you're not old.
I too would like to hear more. The 577 is intriguing. I very much appreciate info on the rifle and the Peregrine bullets used. I used Peregrine's on my last hunt and thought they were superb. I was shooting a lowly 500 however.
Congratulations

OK, so this ain’t African hunting, or really hunting at all, but it was a hoot!
Our little safari into the edges of the...
I'll chime in as another Minnesotan, 1/2 Minnesotan now since I'm now a snowbird. I'm also into single shots so I'll likely chime in if you start posting on this forum.
My go to powder is H335 for my 500 Sharps 2 1/2" (50-90 Sharps). I've tried W748, no way does it come close to H335 no matter what the charts say. Using burn charts is really only useful for comparison purposes to get you into the ball park for choosing a propellent.
I haven't had a problem yet with CCI Large Rifle Magnum but reading this thread with interest since I bought 1000 of the things. I prefer Winchester but CCI was all that could be found. All I need is a charging buffalo and the deffining sound of "click".
Interesting; on the other game you didn't hit bone? I shoot XTP, not the "MAG" version, out of my 458 SOCOM but so far only paper. That changes on the 17th for Florida hogs so your comments are timely. I would have used a different bullet but that's what I had loaded.
I don't believe XTP's are...
It depends. I take the max allowable (11lbs) split between the rifles I'm taking I've always taken some back even after the non-game shooting that always happens in camp (zeroing and just fun). My special issue is that my DG rifle is an odd caliber, not available in the US and certainly not...
I just simply love Ruger No 1's. I bought my first #1 many moons ago as a 300 Win Mag barreled action and it sat in that state for years because I simple didn't have the $$$'s to finish it. As time went on my financial situation improved to the point that I could go a little crazy. The result...
True enough however Blackhorn 209 is a modern nitrocellulose based noncorrosive smokeless powder that is supposed to be 15% livelier than black. I used it on bison in Idaho a few years back. I can't remember what the exact velocity I achieved but it was in excess if 1800fps with a 620gr bullet...
Just guessing but I would imagine Blackhorn 209 would work. I used that with my 500 Sharps, compressed loads, it worked quite well. With a 3 1/4 case it may work quite nicely.
Several gunsmiths. The barrel was was made by McGowen Precision Barrels; Beautiful dodecagon thing. Much of the metal work was gone by Steve Nelson Custom Guns in Oregon. Woodwork was done bt R. Palmer in MN, now deceased. James Kobe also has done wood and metal work. Trigger is by JARD Inc...
I admit using a single shot is not for everyone, for me yes as I do hunt Buffalo with a single shot. Mine is a Ruger No 1 chambered in 500 Sharps 2 1/2" (50-90 Sharps), hand loaded for purpose of course. Thus far it has taken 3 of the 4 buffalo (and 1 bison) I've taken, none requiring PH backup...
That's really impressive. I was looking around for your postings of these buffalo that you killed and the rifles that killed them but can't find them on this forum. I and I'm sure others would be interested in your accomplishments.
You are of course correct on that. A double is a rather specialized tool mainly for a specific purpose. I don't have one but always wanted one just because of the mystique. I shoot a .500 Ruger No 1 which is strange enough, but last year I bought and rebuilt a Ruger RSM .375. I've admired the...
I've heard this from multiple sources. I know that they are shipped with the target from the final regulation, or at least they used to have that included. Are you saying that the target is not to be trusted?
I've also heard this one, the Dremel thing. That's really hard to imagine.
Are these...
I'm curious about the various Sabatti comments; could someone with actual knowledge of Sabatti doubles care to explain what the problem(s) are with these rifles?
I would think that most would call this an example of a "Dagga Boy" (the buffalo not me). This old fellow was taken in TZ last October. We caught up to him at the bottom of a "jungle" covered ravine after many hours of tracking. He had no hair to speak of, scarred face and hide, worn boss and...
