Does anyone reload 358 Norma Mag?

All stock setting in QL for the 358NM, except for tinkering with each powder till the max pressure was reached. 26" barrel length:
H4350 2817 fps
RL16 2914 fps
RL17 2931 fps

If RL16 is this close, probably best to go with it for temperature stability vs the RL17. But the referenced RL16 load was at 107% fill while the RL17 load was 102% fill. (the 4350 load was 108%)

@M48scout
That's going to generate some serious hurt on what it hits.
Guessing around 4,500 fpe.

Around 4715 ft-lbs Bob. (!)

I'm hesitant to actually load near this level until I hear supporting information from others that there is wisdom in that plan. If for no other reason than to preserve my shoulder.

I think once I actually acquire powders, I will use fired factory ammo cases to determine real grains of water capacity and then carefully record seating depth for program inputs. From there, if the program still predicts the cartridge can safely approach the levels I listed, I will inch towards velocities while watching behavior carefully.

Since I have not seen book load data for this round and RL16 or RL17 I would ideally like to hear from another end user first. Lacking that, I would like to hear from others who have used QuickLOAD to generate load data in absence of book data (especially at aspirational velocity levels).

@M48scout
As long as you follow the usual precautions you should be fine.
Start LOW and work up to your MAX SAFE WORKING LOAD.
I use load from a disc by Wayne Blackall alot and that has never let me astray.
Recoil will be firm at those speed but should still be manageable.
With a 280gn swift A frame at 2,700-2800fps I would have no fear taking on any buffalo that walks. Even a 275gn Woodleigh PPSP.
A 310gn soft and solid with those high SD would rattle them as well.
A 225gn Woodleigh hydros at 3,000+fps would ream most things out from arsehole to breakfast.
Good luck on your load development and keep us posted.
Bob

M48scout as Reliant do not list any loads for the 358Norma try contacting them and asking. Also check out loads with AR2208 (Varget). I take it you have a Chronograph; these help considerably when developing loads. Book velocities I pay close attention to, the actual loads not as much. I may be preaching to the converted, if so my apologies.

Good idea about water volume from fired cases. Just realised the water capacity of the 350Rigby cases i posted in another thread were from unfired cases. Sorry Bob.

Though the base to shoulder measurement of the .358 Norma is Nominally .045" greater and the base to top of shoulder is .022" greater, I have fired full-powered loads from necked up, and not fire-formed, Winchester .338 brass with perfect satisfaction. And then loaded and fired those cases several more times with no sign of head separations or other problems. I relegate the ex-.338 cases to the target range and use Norma .358 cases for serious business.

I fully agree that .300 Win Mag cases are the better option than .338 Win Mag but sometimes one must make do with what is at hand and sometimes results are better than expected.

Cheers,
Walt
I have done this as well. I also do it for my 404 BJExpress without issue. I have fire formed several hundred cases doing this process. I have never heard of an issue where fire forming 338 brass in a 358 norma has caused problems.

I've had case head separations using 338 win mag brass, you're better off running 300 win mag brass through your sizing die and necking up the case and pushing the shoulder back. Then trim to length and fire form, you'll have better case life.

@358 Norma
Whenever I'm forming cases to a bigger or smaller cal I ALWAYS just form the neck to make a false shoulder:- is if going from 338 I would size to 375 then back to 35. Just enough to be a slight crush fit in the chamber.
This way you have a false shoulder to headspace off. Virtually eliminates head issues.
A bit of extra effort but well worth it.

I think you're still stretching the brass blowing the shoulder forward, but if it works for you then great. Also 300 win mag brass is usually more available then 338.

@358 Norma
When I make my 25 cases out of 303 brit cases I size the neck about quarter of an und. I move the shoulder forward a lot, blow the case out almost straight, give it a 35 degree shoulder. The neck starts out at .311 long and ends up .257" long so a very radical change. I anneal cases first and case loss is around 3%

Hello everyone,

I just got a 358 NM and will have to reload for it as I am not paying $8 a round to shot it. Just looking for a place to start on this one and would love to see what y’all have come up with!

What are your preferred loads?
Are there bullets or powder you have had better luck with?

I have Sierra pro-Hunter 200gr bullets, Speer hot- cor 250gr bullets, Hornady 250gr interlock, and some 250gr unmarked jacketed bullets.

As for powders I could use, RAMSHOT Hunter, IMR 3031, IMR 4064, H4831SC, and IMR 4895.

Thank you!
I load for a Husqvarna model 1651. Weighs 8 lbs with a 26" BBL and 2-7 redfield denver scope. I have settled on 72 gr of A2700 and a 250 gr Hawk bullet. low ES and 2810 fps. This is a soft bullet that delivers huge expansion on thin skinned game. I recovered a bullet last year under the off side skin of a whitetail that is .95"x1.2" wide by .572" long and retains 242.2 grains weight. Shot broke both shoulders.

Was just curious - was there a lot of blood shot meat with that bullet?

Good information thank you.

I have never used Hawk bullets. Can you substitute existing load data for a given weight, or do you need to make some sort of adjustment for the type of jacket it has?

What distance did you shoot that deer at?

Had four red/white and black metal one pound cans of Norma 204 powder around forever, decided to build loads with it in my BRNO 98 Mauser action 358 Norma, the rifle has a three position Winchester type safety, 26 inch 12 twist barrel and sits in a synthetic stock, all metal is cerakoted black, it wears a matte finish 30mm 3-9 VX-R Leupold Firedot, perfect glass for this setup, a real all weather rig.

New Norma 358 NM brass
250gr Partitions
78grs Norma 204
CCI-250 primers
COL 3.300"
VEL 2809 fps

Have 50 rounds left to shoot and hunt out, when they're gone I'll neck size all 150 cases bumping the shoulders back 0.002"

Will then build all new loads with the 250gr Norma Oryx bullets and H-4350 powder, it will be awhile, the current loads are too accurate and hit too damn hard to waste on paper and rocks, a very capable, accurate and efficient cartridge.

had one many years ago, it was very light. as i remember i used reformed 338 wm cases, very accurett but it kicked the hell out of me and i had a hard time keeping the scope zeroed.

My 358 Norma kicks me worse than my 375H&H. My 358 Norma is on a pre 64 and my 375 is a l61r.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is kdp59935@gmail.com in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
Gents, if you book and pay your deposit before the end of this year , you can have the bigger cull package for the 2026 price! https://www.africahunting.com/threa...griffiths-safaris-starting-at-us-2-560.96285/
I am currently in Northern Cape scouting a hunting area, we will have lots of amazing hunting opportunities for 2027! I will post updated available dates soon!

Good Evening. I am very interested in you hunt for the spiral slam. March in 2028 would be fine for me

Couple of quick questions:

1) Can we add some additional species on
2) what do you want for a deposit?
3) how do you want me to sign up

I'm on whats app or email

Kurt [redacted]

have a great evening
