Classic stalking rifles - today

Sadly my stalking rifles are not fine vintage or new made British rifles, I have one German and three Americans.

DWM '09 Mauser 7x57mm, Express rear sight with barrel band front sight, 175gr Speer Grand Slams.

1955 Winchester model 70 270 Winchester that's original stock was broken back in the 60's, previous owner had a new stock made from a beautiful stick of English walnut, it wears a Redfield receiver peep sight with Redfield Sourdough front sight, 150gr Partitions.

1948 Winchester model 70 30 govt 06, Lyman receiver peep with Redfield Sourdough front sight, 200gr Swift A-Frames.

1952 Winchester model 70 300 H&H magnum, Lyman receiver peep with Redfield Sourdough front sight, 220gr Partitions.

Rifles like these can be put together for very reasonable costs, just last November I hit a really handsome 9pt Whitetail buck at 60 yards slipping through the trees on a hot trail to the girls, he never knew what hit him when the 220gr Partition slammed into the onside shoulder to exit liver offside from the old 300 H&H, he never twitched, it was a hell of a fun hunt.

I walk/stalk jump shoot Whitetails every season, looking very forward to doing more soon.
I like your hunting style!
And that dwm counts as a classic in my books.

This isn't my first or only "stalking rifle", but I just grabbed this from Bass Pro's online used gun listings. It was advertised as a "Belgian Mauser 7x57 with a 26" barrel" without any additional details. From the pictures shown online and the description I got over the phone, I like it well enough to risk the five Benjamin Franklins on it. If it proves unsatisfactory after I pick it up from my local Bass Pro, I have up to three days to return it; so I think the risk is minimal. I think the first exciting hunt with a stalking rifle is the hunt for the rifle itself. ;-)

PS - I know I'll have to source a rear sight blade from somewhere, and I've already got the rear windage screw parts to restore that Leupold scope base.

Cant get over just how much this stock basically looks like a prewar Rigby stock! love it
It was the styling of the time I.e. a classic stalking rifle. Light and nimble, great for shooting irons and offhand. That’s the kind of rifle I’m after and what’s really hard to find in today’s age.
I’m beginning to realise that a heym sr21 super classic is going to be the only factory option today. In Australia, it’s pretty much the cost of a custom rifle however.

To find one like the above is the dream, exactly what I want but affordable!

Sadly, you don't do much stalking in Kansas, the thigh high dry grass lets everything know you are coming. I bought this poor mans stalking rifle from Cabelas several years ago. I had it sent in from another store. I could not have been happier, it was proofed in 1933 and had been fired very little if at all. It is a Mauser 98, 24 inch part oct. barrel, double set triggers, and 8x57i. The caliber is not a problem as I handload all the ammo I shoot. It has never been drilled to scope mounts, I shoot open sights.

Another one of Duane's rifles he built for me, a take-down .275 Rigby. Again, classic English stalking rifle styling. Unfortunately this one is so nice I rarely take it out hunting. Need to change that and get it out more or sell it so someone else will.

Stunning rifle, and that is a very interesting recoil lug setup. I don't think I've seen them done like that before, but looks cool.

It is, I’ve loved Lee Speed’s since I watched that movie as a kid and always wanted one.

Mine was done by William Garden in Scotland somewhere between 1896-1904 from the features and proof marks. It has some nice scroll work, flat rib barrel and a decent stock. The barrel is worn but it still shoots surprisingly tight groups, no qualms shooting game to 150m or so if I do my part.

As an aside, 303 is a criminally underrated cartridge for medium game.
A 303 double rifle is my dream medium game stalking rifle. Definitely underrated!

That looks very "Brno-esque".
Beautiful rifle.
Reminds me of a Brno 21H.
I was offered one a few years back, in 8x57, mint condition for not a lot of money.
I tried hard to see how an 8mm would fit into my needs and just couldn't make it work.
One of (I have many) my greatest misses, in not buying.
Thanks for posting that..... and reminding me !

Not sure if its been mentioned but reading through haven't seen it.
Kimber Caprivi or an 8400 with iron sights put on.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is kdp59935@gmail.com in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
