Heading to South Africa (not hunting)

I go to Cape Town a couple times a month and will be going this week. If you want to take the cable car to the top at Table Mountain do it early (before the winds pick up) and spend the extra money for the express ride. There are almost no bad bets as ar as food is concerned. Some of my...

    Flight booking services

I don't normally use a service to book flights but I will need to this summer to get to Tanzania. I spoke with Travel Express and Gracy Travel at the SCI convention and both seem reasonable. Does anyone have a recommnedation of one over the other or any positive or negative reviews of either...

    Meat Quality for 10ft+ Gators?

I had a 400 pound 11 footer turned in to almost 100 pounds of meat and sausage. The meat will be fine. The thing the processor needs to do is turn it in to thumb sized or smaller bites. Bigger steaks or portions will taste fine but be almost impossible to chew. Gator meat is very sinewy and...

Official AH Get Together In Nashville During Safari Club International (SCI) Convention 2024

Had a great time meeting everyone last night. Andrew and Morgan, Phillip Glass. All the folks from Georgia! Good conversations and good to put names to faces

SOUTH AFRICA: Has Anyone Hunted With Lloyd Safaris?

I hunted with them twice. Both were quick 2 day safaris. Both times were great. I was after night critters and got some very nice trophies including a top 20 caracal and a very big serval as well as trophy blesbuck and oribi. Steph Cloete and Jerald Oosthuizen guided me and put me on great...

    Johannesburg Bookstore

Uber is cheap and reliable. I use it all the time to travel around Joburg.

Skull pick ups. Does any one pick them up?

I found a nice springbuck skull and a very nice kudu skull on two different safaris. I have them both. I've seen a lot of other skulls and horns but they had screw worms(?) in the horns and messed them up too much to keep. I'll always ask the PH if I can take them if they look good

    Recent RSA taxidermists experience

I've used Splitting Image twice in the past and their US affiliate for my 2019 safari. I was going to use the US shop for last years Argentina and 2 short SA safaris but they were an unfortunate casualty of Covid. So I am again using Splitting image. So far the communicationhas been...

Looking for advice, what are the best outfitters in the eastern cape?

I've hunted with Eastcape and Kaoo safaris three times. 2014, 2016, and 2019. Ashley and Dale run a first rate outfit and will put you on fantastic animals. Look for my report on my 2019 safari. That was mostly in the Northern Cape on a concession that no longer allows outside hunters. They...

    Flying standby with firearms

Generally, on an international flight, if the passenger is not on the plane their luggage stays behind with them. If you're flying standby your luggage is usually held until you get cleared to board and then it is loaded. That said, mistakes often happen and luggage and passengers get...

    Newbie

Welcome! If you haven't seen the videos or read the guides I recommend The Perfect Shot by Kevin Robertson. It will help you place your shots on some of the differently shaped antelope like hartebeest and wildebeest. Also a good reference for the critters you're likely to see. And get some...

Small cat hunts and night hunts

I hunted twice this last year with Lloyd Safaris in Mpumulanga. Night hunting I bagged a jackal, serval, porcupine and a couple of southern duikers. Saw tons of servals and jackals and genets. They hunt a multitude of night critters and really know how to find them and call them in. I posted...

    South Africa security alert

Information I have is there is a pride parade there this weekend. Fairly easy to avoid a large gathering like that. And a one time event . It's a shame because I really like Sandton for layovers. Much safer than Johannesburg proper.

    Bring home tanned hides

And make sure you have the certificate that says it has been prepped properly. Probably won't get asked to see it but it will save time if Agriculture in the US asks for it.
