    It’s a hell yes for a gunsmith who owes you a favor and a hell no for your first custom build. I did it once. Wouldn’t do it again unless the donor Ruger was free and I had a spare barrel blank collecting dust. Save the headaches, buy a Winchester or a pre-64 M70 already in .300 H&H.

    Buy MTM K-Zone Rest, yes, it’s plastic. But it’s thick plastic and has a V-yoke front that cradles the barrel and a rear elevator that supports the grip. It’s not a Ransom rest, but for your use case, testing loads, not shooting groups for publication, it’s excellent.

    If you were hunting elk at 400+ yards in open country, or something like a big bear where you want controlled expansion inside the animal, the 160 Accubond makes sense. But for plains game inside 300 yards? TTSX every day.

    Buy the non-battery Trijicon AccuPoint 1-6x24. Put it on your .416. Use it for buffalo, plains game, and leopard during legal light. For the rare chance you need to shoot a leopard in true darkness? Don’t. Wait for light. Or bring a separate red-dot with NV (but that’s a different conversation).

    Get the VX-6HD 2-12x42. Zero it at 100 yards with 300-grain Swift A-Frames or Barnes TSX. Practice from sticks and offhand. Then go hunt.
