Depending on the type of terrain, the area and game you are hunting, that can really vary. Most places with a good PH, expect most plains game shots to be between 100 and 250. I would venture that the 20+ trophies that we took in central Namibia would have averaged about 125 yards.

Hunted that area a few years back. Tracker was wearing cheap Walmart sneakers, PH had lighter weight ankle high Merrell hikers. My Daughter and I had all leather Keen ankle high hikers - they were about perfect. We hunted pretty much all spot and stalk. Don't really need a heavy boot around...

In the late 70's, 80's and early 90's, we ran redfields on most ofour rifles, both hunting, silhotte shooting and bench rest . No big bores, couple of 35 Whelen were the top end. Anyway - not a single problem that wasn't hunter inflicted. Some of those rifles still wear those same scopes...

Have only hunted a couple of areas in Namibia and SA. Saw one dandy in Namibia, (Kalahari), but only one. Saw way more big mature hogs in the Limpopo, Thambinizi / Rankins Pass area. Saw one bruiser there, that equals or exceeds anything posted so far - looked ridiculous. Still kick myself...

I'd second the multiple powders. Personally I'd pick the 3 bullets, that you would be most comfortable with and then go to work with a lot of different powders. Our 7mm mags all get best results out of IMR 4831, but at least 3 or 4 other powders that could give good results.

I haven't seen any taxidermy out of any African country or shop that comes close to what you can expect from the top end American or Canadian guys. A few bucks one way or the other - pretty much non issue for me. I maybe structure and set up my Safari budget a bit different than a lot of guys...
