Traveling With Ammo: South African Air's New Rules Lead to Confiscation

I never realized this was an issue either = have only hunted Namibia and RSA, and have never had any ammo checked, or any questions asked about it. I understand that some of the other countries are much more diligent about this and there may be issues - have never looked into it. I tend to...

    270 Brno vs 6.5x55 Sako

    Locking ammo cans for travel?

That post just about says it - "not sure any of them know what the actual rules are" Seems like you can get different answers from different people with the same company, I've even seen them argue and disagree about their policies, and you can show them what it says on the website and they...

    Locking ammo cans for travel?

Just using a Pelican (1200 series) - actually my camera case (still take a full size SLR with a bigger lens). Use it for ammo and stuff it full of other stuff on the way over, camera goes in carry on and on the way back the camera goes in the Pelican, just use keyed locks, never had an issue

6.5 x 55 Swede for African plains game

I would consider the 2700 - 2800 fps that you mentioned to be a meduim speed for a 7mm 140 gr bullet (would be achieved by a lot of the popular 7mm cartridges) - but I would suggest that very few 7mm-08 will achieve that velocity, as most manufactures will have used a 26 inch barrel to gather...

6.5 x 55 Swede for African plains game

You will have a hard time selling this line in our hunting camp. I will admit that I have very little experience with 6,5's, but our family has shot a lot of game with 7mm-08 with premium 140 gr bullets (probably not a world different). I have seen that round in action, witnessed how it...

6.5 x 55 Swede for African plains game

Really don't understand why any one would bother taking a 6.5 anything to Africa - when there are so many better options and the price of a rifle is a very small percentage of the expense for a safari - lose one animal like a kudu and all of a sudden your gun has cost you more than it is worth ...

    Short range/ammunition advice

Not much to worry about with expansion from Nosler Partitions - the design of the bullet has the soft frontal portion expanding (usually quite dramatically at close ranges) and the the harder rear portion of the bullet will push through to give you the penetration - the best of both worlds from...

    Does Size Really Matter?

Your statement regarding mass measurements is not really accurate - the B&C system (for most multi pointed game like whitetail deer) allows 4 mass measurements (on the main beam) irregardless of how many points the antler has. And I totally agree with you, the system gives no credit or...

    30-06 vs 300 Win Mag

I've hunted both the '06 and 300 Win Mag as well as the 300Weatherby Mag - all are fine cartridges and get the job done. A lot to be said for being comfortable and confident with your rig. My theory - carry the biggest stick that you are comfortable with, might make the difference on a...

    35 Whelen

Our Whelen in 700 Remington Classic handles pressures better than our other two on Mauser actions. Our top end load for that rifle - using 4064, (with pressures that are getting to the edge of my comfort level) pushes 250gr bullets chronographed at 2570. Have backed off a grain for my hunting...

    35 Whelen

I am with you on "heavy for caliber bullets" - usually extremely effective in hunting situations - really don't understand the new thinking / fad towards light weight bullets at hyper velocities. I understand that with some of the mono metal bullets that velocity is a requirement for proper...
  37. N

    35 Whelen

We pretty much use the 250 as our heavy bullet - it does everything we need - not that it's a long range setup, but I imagine you would give up quite a bit trajectory with the 280

    257 Roberts vs 25-06

we have both and they are both great cartridges - the .257 we currently have will shoot 115 gr Nosler Partitions into a ragged hole all day long at a bit over 3000 fps , struggle to get the same accuracy out of our 25-06 I use the Roberts as my varmint rig with 87 gr bullets - a bit on the...

Looking for advice toward my first Safari

Depending on where, your schedule and who you are flying with - taking your rifle may not be a big deal - but it can add some delays, unknowns and more hassles, all you need is to run into the wrong person on the wrong day, and that firearm can be a real hassle. I've done it both ways - taken a...
