Up for sale is a Nikon Monarch 3 3-12x42 (1" tube) with the NikoPlex (Duplex) reticle and a custom XR turret. These are great scopes for the money, and this line has been discontinued. I have never hunted with this scope, it's only ever been on target rifles. The glass is extremely clear and the...
Beautiful gun! You could even shoot Spred-R loads through one of the barrels and it would make a lovely gun for upland birds. Certainly will bust clays with the rest of them. I recommend RST shells if its an older gun.
I own a Henry Atkin Best Sidelock in 12 Bore (our Gauge). It's a 6.5 lb gun...
If it was a Yugo M48 it'd have the coat of arms on the receiver ring as well as the M48 marking, it'd also have a manufacturer's marking (Cyrillic lettering) on the left side of the receiver (or at minimum it'd have some form of proof markings). Doesn't appear to be any evidence that those were...
Yeah in my experience, Armslist is not a reliable place to go purchase. I never use it. Here in Texas we have TexasGunTrader which is a little better but you have to be careful and ask lots of questions of prospective buyers/sellers. And even then, there is a risk. I pretty much exclusively buy...
I would have to guess these were bolt-action rifles...if not, getting a (matched?) pair of Purdey double rifles for $62000 USD is an absolute steal, especially with such provenance...if anything that outrages me more than the story itself ;)
Just to add, @Eventually_Africa_Again, assuming in the original post you meant comparing a 450/400 3" to a 450 (NE) 3 1/4". In which case, the above posts are correct (including the helpful reference to the Craig Boddington article).
However, there is also the 450/400 NE 3 1/4" which is...
None (at least in reality - in my dreams I own many!), though I do own side-by-side and over-under shotguns. I would love to own a double rifle one day.
Can anyone comment on their usefulness or appropriateness for N. American game - in the big bore calibers that is, I understand you can get...
Aaron,
I should've mentioned in my original reply that I've spent the better part of the last several years asking a very similar question to yours. I'm happy to share some of my views if you want to PM me. I will say that somewhat along the lines of what @rookhawk said, it's all about what you...
Aaron,
I guess it depends on what you define as "break the bank" or a "sleeper" rifle. I personally own 2 Oberndorf Mauser Type B rifles, one made in 1921 and one made in 1940, both of them were not cheap but also not outrageously expensive like some "best" quality rifles or even new high-end...
Welcome from a fellow Texan new to this forum, obsessed with vintage hunting rifles and starting to fall in love with the mystique of big bore rifles. Glad to have you here!
