    Francois Lake, B.C.

Hello Daryl & well done sir! I'll try to look you up next time we're at our cabin on the West end across from Noralee. That will be towards the end of August I expect. You could teach me a few things about catching lake trout ( or Char as they're called locally) and I can share some stories...

    From the shooting range

OK two more, a bunch of mule deer walking past a coyote I shot just 100M to the E side of my shooting range. Coyote is laying in front of the small buck. And a whitetial buck I passed up last fall while hunting mule deer just 300M behind where my gongs are hanging. I'm fortunate to be able to...

    From the shooting range

Yes, that rifle is my Beretta Silver Sable O/U 9.3x74R. Another photo of my range, with the 300M gongs in the background. I had to wait for the moose and mule deer to clear out before I shot at the gongs that winter afternoon.

Where is the best steak (and why)

The best steak I can recall is from my youth. T-bone beef my family raised from an Angus calf, grown on our pasture, fattened on our own farm's feed, slaughtered and butchered by my Dad with my brother's and my help. Prepared at our modest family cabin by the shores of a little lake just a half...

    From the shooting range

Here's a few photos of my range. Older photos. I'm fortunate to have a private range on my own property, 5 minutes away, shoot whenever I want and that's quite often. I don't have many photos to record my activities though. I was there shooting today, fired off a box of .375 H&H at the steel...

    NF CPS on buff 9.3x62

I've shot only one CPS at a cape buffalo, a follow up shot at about 90 M with my .450-400 double. Hit the buff in the butt as it twirled to run away after the first good hit with a soft. Bullet penetrated the ham, guts, rumen, diaphragm, one lung and lodged against the ribs in the front of the...

    Looking for .30R Blaser components

Another option may be to buy empty brass cartridge casings in Canada, a firearms licence is not required to buy brass. About your .35 Whelen and search for snap caps ... the shoulder dimensions of .35 Whelen is the same as for the parent cartridge .30-06. Just use .30-06 snap caps!

    Looking for .30R Blaser components

Nordic Marksman in Canada has RWS .30R Blaser ammunition in stock. I see you are in Maine USA. Perhaps you could purchase some with the help of a Canadian and arrange for pick up, but not sure what your USA import laws might think of that.

How far do you go in the backcountry?

Most of my true wilderness hunts have been by float plane access, or by canoe. Usually for moose. No limit to how far you go with those, you just need pick the right blue spot on the topographical map to head towards. But do try to shoot a moose close to the water. More than a km or two and the...

    Uganda 9,3x74R

I'd also suggest the Norma Oryx for hunting buffalo with this cartridge. RWS Uni is a fine bullet, a very good choice for somewhat smaller game, but is designed to fragment. I've never had a Norma Oryx fail. They consistently expand, penetrate nice and deep, and hold together. If the RWS EVO...

    Varget in 450/400 3”?

I've used RL15 for some loads, and can't see why Varget wouldn't work just as well. Some loads with RL15 call for fillers, ( dacron fibre or foam backer rod) so be aware of that. In my Merkel double rifle, best accuracy / regulation was with IMR4831 but both RL 15 and H1000 ( quite different...

    Question on Browning Belgium .375

Be sure to cycle some rounds through the action of your newly purchased Browning FN ‘98’ Safari .375. I purchased one recently that looked pristine, had the “controlled round feed action” but needed $800 in custom magazine & feed ramp work to make it feed reliably. And another couple hundred $...
