    Uganda 9,3x74R

I'd also suggest the Norma Oryx for hunting buffalo with this cartridge. RWS Uni is a fine bullet, a very good choice for somewhat smaller game, but is designed to fragment. I've never had a Norma Oryx fail. They consistently expand, penetrate nice and deep, and hold together. If the RWS EVO...

    Varget in 450/400 3”?

I've used RL15 for some loads, and can't see why Varget wouldn't work just as well. Some loads with RL15 call for fillers, ( dacron fibre or foam backer rod) so be aware of that. In my Merkel double rifle, best accuracy / regulation was with IMR4831 but both RL 15 and H1000 ( quite different...

    Question on Browning Belgium .375

Be sure to cycle some rounds through the action of your newly purchased Browning FN ‘98’ Safari .375. I purchased one recently that looked pristine, had the “controlled round feed action” but needed $800 in custom magazine & feed ramp work to make it feed reliably. And another couple hundred $...

The .375H&H a very versatile rifle

Before a hunt in Zimbabwe a couple years back, I tired of shooting paper targets while training for Cape Buffalo. So I took my .375 rifle to a local pasture full of ground squirrels. What fun! A couple sessions of 40 shots each time was much better than all the paper targets I'd perforated...

Kudu hunting v Elk hunting - comparisons?

Not all elk hunting is located in the USA, although the Canadian elk range is more limited, hunting elk here can be very good. Last year was the first year I did not kill a Saskatchewan elk, after a string of killing one every year for thirty years. Correction - one year I hunted caribou...

    Who wears shorts on Safari?

I would wear shorts if I could. BUT my grub white Canadian legs don't do well with African sun or thorns. This is my legs after one afternoon of stalking giraffe in Namibia. I find lightweight cotton covering my legs is much more practical while hunting. I do sometimes wear shorts in camp.

A fun restoration - custom stock for my Brno ZKK 601 .222

... and now I'm appropriately armed with a proper controlled-round feed "stopping rifle" if I ever get charged by a badger!

A fun restoration - custom stock for my Brno ZKK 601 .222

Call me a gun nut, but I think some firearms are works of fine and functional art. Good guns help mindful hunters connect with culture, heritage, craftsmanship, and environment. This custom Brno ZKK 601 chambered in .222 Remington has an action made in 1967 in the the Zbrojovka Brno factory in...

    What did you reload today?

That pistol .404 bullet might just work OK. Kinda strange but I like it!

Head shot and spine shot Question on broadside cape buffalo

I believe that the neck shot pictured above would have been effective if placed approx. two handswidths lower down. Just below the bottom of the shadow cast by the horn.

Head shot and spine shot Question on broadside cape buffalo

One more note about the brain shot on my buff: A buffalo's skull has some very strong structures that can stop good, heavy bullets. The 400 grain Swift A-Frame bullet did not exit. I was fortunate that my bullet found the easiest path to the brain, angling from the rear.

Head shot and spine shot Question on broadside cape buffalo

My last buffalo was a couple years ago in Mozambique. Due to the front buckle on my sling strap breaking, my rifle had taken a fall in the morning. It looked OK and so I did not verify the scope was still sighted in. That was a serious error. When I shot the buff, he was standing perfectly...

Delta or United direct to Jo'Burg

I flew via Newark/ United once. Never, ever again. Mainly because of the Newark airport gong show and surly & lazy security personnel. My connection allowed 4 hours between flights and they'd closed the departure gate by the time I cleared the inspection gauntlet.

What bullet for Dangerous game do you trust your life with and what bullet do you not trust at all ?

My experience is very limited compared to many here, but I would hunt dangerous game with & trust the following. Based on what's worked for me I'd use the following expanding bullets on buffalo: Hornady DGX ( new bonded version only!) Swift Aframe North Fork CPS Barnes TSX And for solids, I've...
