Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

I sent a note to Chris Griesbach, skilled rifle smith and member of the Custom Gunmaker's Guild. He agreed to take on the project and is quite confident he can make that old Browning feed properly. I'll get him to do a little customizing and cosmetic improvements while it's in his shop. Just a...

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

"Final attempt: I just purchased a Browning Safari, FN Supreme M98 type action, .375H&H that has been the property of one owner since new for the past 60 or so years. It's been a safe queen. It was built before Browning's problem with salt wood stocks. I have high hopes for when it arrives in...

Application Season what are your plans

My local tag applications don't happen until May. So I haven't given that much thought yet. I have applied for a Reindeer hunt in Iceland, so I hope that tag comes through.

    What did you reload today?

There are two issues when loading .38 brass to .357 magnum pressures. Internal capacity and the brass thickness / toughness. I can't measure brass toughness so I go with that same over all length AND reduce maximum load powder charges just a little bit from full bore .357 mag data. Over All...

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

BeeMaa, I suffer from combining Champagne tastes and a Beer budget. With the wisdom of experience, I should have just spent 4x as much, bought a Blaser R8 or a Heym Martini Express or a new Mauser 98 and avoided all the disappointment.

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

About the others, not much to tell. One is a Verney-Carron Impact Plus takedown bolt action 9.3x62. Worked perfectly from the start. Still does. It's a push feed, detachable magazine, switch barrel rifle. Not what most would consider a dangerous game rifle. Even though I never used it on...

Rifle Lessons Learned from the Zimbabwe Professional Hunter Proficiency Exam

This article has been so informative and has guided my dangerous game rifle purchases for some time. It's been a long and somewhat painful education. If only limiting my odyssey to .375 H&H bolt action rifles, ( and as noted in previous posts ) I've experienced the following: Ruger RSM .375...

sight hole drilled too deep into bore

It's a Remington. About what I've experienced and expect from Remingtons. If it was mine I'd get rid of it (sold at a low price) with a full warning to the buyer.

    What did you reload today?

The Rossi M92 that I had before easily shot both .38's and .357's too. I miss that versatility, but the Winchester has superior fit and finish, closer tolerances, and accuracy - but likes .357 only.

    What did you reload today?

Ah, but I'm not shooting revolver. My Win M92 rifle won't reliably feed .38 special cartridges loaded at standard .38 length. And it won't feed wad cutters or most semi wad cutters. Jams frequently. And I'd prefer to have a load that shoots to the same point of aim as full power .357 magnum...

    What did you reload today?

The Lee die will squeeze a decent and functional crimp on a plated or plain lead bullet even when the bullet does not have a cannelure in the proper place. In fact you must be a little careful not to put too much crimp on the case mouth. You may cut through the plating and cause other problems...

    What did you reload today?

I was pleased today to find a solution to a fun, but not very serious reloading challenge. I have a Winchester M92 .357 Mag. lever action that isn't good for much, actually, but is a fun rifle that I use to plink informal targets and shoot the occasional varmint. Full power factory loads are...

What can you just not seem to buy enough of.....

Reloading components, especially hunting bullets. And brass. And powder. Um, primers too. Or if I'm more honest - ammunition in general. I kinda hoard factory loads too. And fishing tackle. All filed under the heading "consumables". I hate running out, so have made running out not possible.
