View out the window- Post your pics

It's still winter here in central Saskatchewan. -15°C or so. Our first melt should happen soon. View out my front window, and on a back road taking my dog for a run while I drive...

    Your Powder Selection Criteria?

I look in the manuals or at good on-line data published by the powder / bullet manufacturers. If three or more sources agree on the best two or three powders for a certain bullet weight, ( velocity and consistency ) I see what's available on the market or in my stash and try one or two of those...

    Solid before soft point

"I think a good compromise would be the north fork cup point solid…" Me too. I've only shot one CPS at a buffalo, but it did its job exactly as I hoped. Hit hard, visible reaction to the shot, penetrated very deeply, expanded to a wider diameter, good wound channel, and retained all weight.

    Solid before soft point

Hunters from the USA tend to answer by suggesting the bullet choices available to them. To answer your question about RWS 9.3x74R ammunition, I expect the EVO bullet would be more appropriate than the UNI classic for hunting very large game like buffalo. I've only shot a few animals with each...

Today are you more likely to buy an older rifle or brand new one ?

Good old rifles that are experienced, tested and have been well taken care of are my preference. My most recent purchase was a Browning FN Safari in .375 H&H. It's just a couple years "newer" than I am. For high volume shooting and varmint / target rifles I make an exception, I like "new" for that.

    Practice bullets vs hunting bullets

I commonly load cheaper bullets for practise. For example and as already mentioned, Hornady flat base interlocks shoot to the same point of impact in my rifles as my hunting loads with Nosler Partition or Swift Aframe bullets.

Model 70 extra power firing pin spring

Wish I could have found an extra power firing pin spring before I got rid of my new Winchester M70 Alaskan. Same problem, supposedly fixed on warranty, but the firing pin strikes were still too weak for my confidence. I was told the spring was "special" and a replacement not available. Good luck...

Norma Oryx on thick skinned game

I’ve used both the Grand slam and Oryx bullets a reasonable amount, and although they look similar in profile, in my limited experience they seem quite different in mode of operation. Comparing a Grand Slam 250 grain from a .35 Whelen to Oryx 285 gr. From a 9.3x62, both fired at about 2450 fps...

Spray foam Wipe Out bore cleaner?

I use Wipe out and their accelerator. Works good. Even cleans badly copper fouled bores if you do a couple applications. .

    Drilling back up question

I have no experience and next to no opinion on this topic, but will add the observation that my Merkel 95S drilling cocks all three firing mechanisms while loading (it is quite stiff to open). It has a normal non-automatic tang safety ( so much better than an automatic safety or the side mounted...

    Hornady 450/400 3"

I have pulled bullets from Hornady factory loads, and weighted the powder, but I have to recite from memory since I sold the rifle and with it the reloading records. 79 grains of a powder that "looks" similar to H1000 is what I recall.

    Drilling back up question

I've recently purchased a 12-12/9.3x74R drilling and I am interested in the responses that you will receive. Seems like a reasonable idea to me.
