I experimented with the 300 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet in a reduced .458 load... I HIGHLY recommend you NOT use that one for hunting... I shot a late season WT doe with it and the bullet completely came apart and made a mess, with shrapnel going everywhere, excessive meat loss.
If you get there and the 80 rounds of ammo that you custom loaded and tested and brought with you disappear, you borrow/rent a rifle from the outfitter... shit happens, you don't have to dumb down your approach to cover a "what if" scenario. This isn't a life or death scenario... most gun...
Personally, for PG, including Eland, I would go with the 7mm PRC over the .300. The 168 LRX is going to drop anything you care to shoot with no noticeable difference over the .30 cal group... alot of guys are killing their Eland with the piddly 6.5 Man Bun for Pete's sake... the 7 PRC is good...
Besides Africa, I have used various .458's on NA game, deer, moose and bears. I shot this 450 pound boar this spring with a .458 Carbine using Barnes Original 400 SSP's. No reason not to use it on moose.
