Would a 450 grain .458 Win Mag be a perfectly acceptable standard for elephant?

So given that the Barnes 450 grain FN solid and the CEB 450 grain solids have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt, it stands to reason that a shorter 450 grain lead core solid, also with .306 SD, should work fine as well. Maybe I have it in my head that retaining 2150 fps is more important...

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

If you forced me out of .375H&H, it would have to be .458 Win Mag in a Model 70 Safari Express for me, though I would really have to work up to the recoil. I'd run loads from 250 to 500 grains depending on what was needed. I think it would be a blast to use with Trail Boss and light bullets...

Would a 450 grain .458 Win Mag be a perfectly acceptable standard for elephant?

Could a 450 grain solid or Swift A-frame out of a .458 Win Mag be a Goldilocks loading that hits 2200-2300 fps without load compression, and still provide everything needed for Elephants? IE could one safely let go of the 500 grain .470 Nitro Express paradigm, given the advances in bullet...

Blaser R8 Professional: how to shorten length of pull?

Whoops R8 not R9. Pardon the typo...

Blaser R8 Professional: how to shorten length of pull?

So I've got a synthetic R9 Professional now and I do like it a lot, but find the14.5" LOP a bit lanky compare to the usual 13.5" LOP on my Winchester Model 70. I don't understand why the standard stock is so long. I've looked at the other synthetic options, and the short synthetic stock is...

Blaser Q: loose front sight blade

Hi all, I bought a new Blaser R8 barrel and the front sight rattles faintly in its seat. Is this a normal thing to tell me I need to sight it in and out some tension on it? Thanks!

Blaser R8 Polymer 22mm forend question

Mostly to serve as a heavy stable platform for sighting in scopes on given barrels (especially the .375H&H) and to up the recoil tolerance when target shooting with .308/.30-06. Good to hear that the forends are stiff enough.

    POLL: Preferred Big Bore Cartridge?

I agree, and posted that I think given the changes in paradigms with modern ammunition, that this can be neatly done in 2mm increments: https://www.africahunting.com/threads/small-medium-and-large-bore-thoughts-on-a-metric-definition.75326/ Why not: Up to 6 mm (0.236 in): Very Small Bore /...

Blaser R8 Polymer 22mm forend question

Thanks. Now the question is whether it's worth the money to gain the weight and a .458 Lott option I'll likely never use, or if I should just buy a 16oz kickstop for a 17mm stock and be happy maxing out with .375H&H magnum.

Blaser R8 Polymer 22mm forend question

Thanks, I forgot to mention using a bipod in my post (corrected now). Thinking that the additional gap would be a cooling advantage for informal target shooting, as would the extra weight, but want to make sure the thing wouldn’t be flexing around on a bipod given the decreased thickness...

Blaser R8 Polymer 22mm forend question

Hi all, Considering a Blaser R8 Professional Hunter with the polymer stock and 22mm barrel channel. If I use it with a standard 17mm barrel, is the forend still stiff enough for target shooting using a bipod with the free-floated barrel? Thanks

Blaser R8: lowest QD scope mount?

I find that the factory bases and low 1" rings are still on the tall side for a good cheek weld. Can you recommend something lower? Perhaps EAW or some such? Hopefully still QD but I would carry an Allen key or screwdriver if I had to. What's the lowest you can get in any diameter?

Any tips for using iron sights with failing eyesight?

Williams makes a 'Twilight Aperture' that may be a good balance here. https://shop.williamsgunsight.com/ecommerce/p/aperture--twilight-001442

Any tips for using iron sights with failing eyesight?

IIRC, small apertures increase depth of field and sharpness. This is why pinhole cameras work with no glass.
