Your 3 favorite hunting cartridges of all time

I know I have posted to this thread somewhere before, but as I think about it, my favorite three hunting rifles all start with the number eight. 8x57 8x68s 8mm Rem Mag Put Africa in the mix and I would have to add: 9.3x62 375H&H Recently my son built me a custom 340Wby. Presently I am...

    Sako 90 Hunter 375 H&H

Toby I use the Optilock ring and mounts on my Sako 85 Grizzly. I like them. They are very easy to remove with T-25 Torx and seem to hold zero. I look forward to see your thoughts about the rifle after you have shot it for a while.

Preferred Plains and NA All-Around Stalking Rifle Weights and Glass - Not a Cartridge/Caliber Question

I like the Blaser K95. This one is chambered in 8X57IRS. Barrel length is 23.6"

What are your favorite hunting camp meals?

If I had to feed twenty hunters, I think, I would hire a proffesional Chuck Wagon Camp Cook and let him figure it out. But for me, Breakfast: breakfast burritos, coffee, Lunch (in the field): dried or cured meats, hard cheese’s, Dinner: pot of beans, braised meat.

    The Perfect Plains Game Rifle

I am inclined to say the 8X57 followed by the 30-06. Both are quite capable. The 9.3x62 would be another possibility. All three of those will handily take care of Kudu, and with solids or heavy for caliber bullets for the Klipsinger.

    8x57 loads

I don’t know. Good chance your seating depths will be different. I measure for seating depth’s with a Hornady Gauge. As for powder charges, start a couple of grains lower and work it up looking for pressure signs. The 160gr TTSX is a really good bullet for the 8x57.

I need a companion rifle for the 500J

Just looked at Raven Rock Precision, they have Norma made brass for the 8x68s brass. https://ravenrocksprecision.com/product/8x68s-brass/

I need a companion rifle for the 500J

I have taken Elk with my 8x68s Blaser R8 using 220gr SGK out to near 400yds. The only problem with the 8X68s is the availability of factory ammunition and brass. I think NECG sales RWS ammunition. I use to buy brass from Huntington’s but they closed shop a while back. It is a good caliber if you...

I need a companion rifle for the 500J

Get a Blaser R8 and two or three barrels fort it. They offer multiple calibers including the 500 Jeffrey. For a second rifle I like either the 8x57 or 8x68s or the 9.3x62. One of the nice things about Blaser’s are the synthetic stocks are ambidextrous, it’s just a matter of putting a left hand...

    375 H&H Optic

I am using the Z8i 1-8x24 4A IF on mine. I like it a lot.

What have you killed with the 8x57?

Great thread, can't believe I hadn’t seen it before. My son used his 8x57 Remington 700 Classic in Namibia and has taken Springbok, Impala, Blesbok, Hartebeest, Warthog, Gemsbok, Kudu, Mt. Zebra and Blue Wildebeest with 160gr TTSX and Leopard with 180gr Nosler BT. I have a Sako 85 Grizzly in...

    8mm rounded soft nose bullets

Woodleigh makes good bullets, though I am not sure how available they are at the moment. I shoot their 250gr RNSN in my 8x68s, it’s very accurate. In the 8mmRM you might be able to get 2700-2800fps. Hawk Bullets makes a lot of RNSP bullets. They seem ok but I haven’t much experiance with them...

    7x57 Load Development

Why not try the 160 Hammer or even one of their heavier bullets for the 7mm. Hammer are good bullets. Other options you might consider are the North Fork 175gr or the 156gr Norma Oryx. North Fork has theirs in stock and Raven Rock Precision has the 156gr Oryx in stock at a very good price. Both...
