I recently finished listening to Bush War Operator Memoirs of the Rhodesain Light Infantry, Selous Scouts and Beyond by A.J.Balaam and am now listening to The Legend of a Hunter in a Bygone Era by Ric Palmer-Wilson on Audible.
Namibia, used to be German South West Africa. So it seems to me German calibers, 7x57, 8x57, 8x68s and 9.3x62 would be in order for the region you are planning to hunt.
My sons and I have been to Namibia only twice. My yougest son took all of his game with a 8x57 and 160gr TTSX and oldest son...
Gert you may want to get yourself a Hornady o.a.l. gauge. I don’t know if they offer the 9.3x62 case. If not it’s easy to make your own. You will need to find a 5/16-36 tap. An L or M drill bit will work with that tap.
The picture shows a Hornady o.a.l. gauge, along with a case and 286gr...
Business, if you can swing it you won’t regret it. First trip was United, LAX to Frankfort then Air Namibia to Windhoek, very good trip. Second trip was Swiss Air all the way. The best I have ever taken.
Gert 160gr TTSX will take care of any PG and 2500 -2600 fps should be relativly easy obtained. I use CFE223. Ramshot's Big Game would be another good powder for that bullet weight.
If you want to go heavy try Norma’s 325gr Oryx. I use RL-17 and have had it up to 2330fps but found my best...
Barnes offers the 5.56 x45 with the 70gr TSX in factory ammo and would be the easiest and most practical setup mentioned by @Philip Glass. The only thing you must be aware of is, you will need to have at least a 1:8 twist barrel. I don’t know what twist rates rifle manufacturers are producing in...
Gert, Barne’s makes 250gr TTSX, 250gr TSX and 286gr TSX in 9.3mm. My son has cleanly taken Kudu, Wildebeest, Zebra and others with 250gr TTSX and I have taken Moose and Black Bear with 250gr TTSX bullets in our 9.3X62 rifles.
Comparing calibers is fun. Reading through this thread I thought I would 1. Subjectively and with some 2. objective data, compare both the 9.3x62 and 375H&H. I am a little surprised as I now think they are closer than I thought they would be. Anyway here is my little comparison.
Hi Gert, nice looking rifles.
What powders are availbale to you, or are you stuck with only Somchem. CFE223 and Ramshot Big Game work very well with the 250 grain range of bullets. Sixty to sixty two grains should get you 2,500fps or 763m/s plus. 55-56 grains of IMR3031 should get you around...
I used to use TTSX and TSX in various calibers. A few years back what I wanted were unavailable for a good while. So, luckly for me, I stumbled upon Hammer Bullets and have never looked back.
Feral cats work well for me. Feed them just enough to stay around. If the rats get up in your walls and/or attic then a ferret would be better. Keep a air rifle handy for back up.
