This is the common sentiment but so few who say it have actually done it.
The guys pushing the small caliber movement teach a shooting class and all agree that the increase in accuracy is worth the loss in horsepower. They all practice what they preach and hunt with small calibers since they...
I dont know that I'll ever be priced in to Africa. Its a dream, but at my current age and life trajectory its going to probably be a retirement gift type thing.
My problem is I want to do too much. I want to go on to a guided elk hunt with a lodge one day (not DIY out of a backpack like I do...
Cant overstate this. Individually, not many people put enough bullets into enough animals in enough scenarios to have any meaningful data set on anything. Collectively, the few thousand people posting here certainly do. We all just need to do a better job documententing and sharing our data so...
No first hand experience with this exact combo. I know I couldnt fit enough in a .338 win mag case to cause any pressure signs on 100+ degree days. I imagine that would apply moreso for the .375 h&h. 4831 is pretty slow and the .375 is definitely not overbore.
Even if that ridge is 20mm+ thick, and even if i did hit it perfectly square, I don't think thats stopping any .22 cal 80 gr bullet that is going 1500+ fps. Thats still under an inch of bone. Its also going to add a lot of shrapnel in the chest cavity.
Thats the thing. Guys are doing it with .22 caliber 80gr bullets. Why would a 6.5mm bullet not have anywhere near the energy needed?
Its also not really an energy problem. A 250gr .338 bullet might get there with more energy than the .22 has at the muzzle. If the .338 bullet doesn't use that...
If you ignore the headstamp and just focus on the terminal performance and the math, the long skinny bullets start out-performing the short fat ones as the ranges get longer. For instance, id probably rather hit an elk with a heavy 6.5 bullet at 500 yards than a heavy .308 bullet. The 6.5 bullet...
Ill chime in as someone who has partially bought into the smaller is better movement.
Ive popped my share of magnum primers, most of them at the range learning how to shoot. I handle recoil well. The smaller is better ethos is built around primarily shooting better, and using the right-sized...
I deer hunt with an AR15 a fair bit. Lots to like about it. Its ultra compact and light, no recoil, excellent accuracy. The adjustable stock is super nice, can be fitted for me or my wife or my kid in seconds
