You are totally correct. I have a friend who is also a member on here and I know he has had the same thing with a 375 on plains game. The locals I have met all use 308 or 300 win mag. I can't fault the 375 though so far. It is very decisive.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I have never personally understood how going out with multiple rifles works. I have always just set off with one rifle and a plan, which sometimes changes! I think taking two rifles would just add complications for me!

My local force will not condition 300 Win Mag for UK use. I have tried that already!
I think the 8.5x55 would be ideal for what I want. It is ammunition availability that concerns me. I spoke to someone who used one as a hire rifle in both Spain and South Africa last year, so might be getting more popular. From what I can see it looks very similar to a 338-06.

I think that most of my hunting in the future (or I hope) will be larger antelope at ranges of less than 250m. Typically 100m - 150m.
I think our firearms departments just don't like a 338 of any description.
