A Pedestal Project for a Sable

Hmmmm. Could be a fun side business. The first one is hard. A replica would be much easier & faster.

    NAMIBIA: Bucket List Namibian Safari

Great report. Sounds like a nice bunch of trophies. I love Namibia!

CAMEROON: Faro Safaris Hunting Block 18 Cameroon

Very cool. Roan is quickly rising to the top of my "still gotta do that" hunts. I imagine I'd like Cameroon immensely for the variety of terrain and game. Not sure a LDE is in my future.... but I could perhaps be convinced. ;)

I Confess: I Love Tikka Rifles...

I own one in .243 Win and I have extensively used a particular Tikka in .308 on multiple occasions in Africa (where I first encountered one). Maybe they aren't super fancy, but they put bullets where you tell them to go. In reality, the three most accurate rifles I own are two expensive custom...

The "basics" for guns in America

If you're thinking about a Ruger 10/22, also give the CZ 457 a look. I have both, and the CZ is more fun and significantly more accurate. It's a bit more money, but if I was shopping for another, I wouldn't even look at the 10/22.

A Pedestal Project for a Sable

@Llano Estacado The base is 20" per side. The top of the trapezoid part is 8" per side. The trapezoid is 34" high, which I set to put the eye of the sable even with the eye height of a 5'10" person. It works out to almost exactly 10 degrees. The top plate is 11"x11".

A Pedestal Project for a Sable

@buffybr, those look fantastic. So, it warmed up a little here today and the lacquer dried pretty quickly. I’m not sure if I like the rotation but that’s easy to change later. Here he is in his new home. As the cherry ages, it will deepen in color to a richer dark red color. Takes a...

A Pedestal Project for a Sable

I’ve always enjoyed combining two hobbies - in this case, woodworking and hunting. Well, hunting is WAY beyond a hobby, but you get the idea. I recently received a sable mount from a hunt we did in the summer of 2024. The guys in Africa did a great job and it seemed appropriate to build...

Mulling over a bolt gun or a double rifle

If you're not sure, go with the bolt gun. When it's time for a double, I imagine you'll be certain.

What is your dream hunt in Africa..?

6 week, full bag safari in Tanzania. Long enough to do plenty of non-hunting things too. Just totally relax and take what comes. Tent-style, with a fire-warmed bath, pick up and move when the situation calls for it, etc.

Elephant tusk weight- your goal for a “big” one

I was invited to heft some tusks in a vault in Namibia. “Hard to pick up” is my goal. So, maybe 50-60 lbs each would be fun. A truly huge bull is the stuff of dreams. Tops, of all possible trophies on the planet. I think I want to hunt elephant again someday, and if I ever do, it will be in...

    Traveling to Namibia With Reloads

7 trips to Namibia from 2010 to 2024. The only place I’ve had trouble was in Johannesburg. I’ve always flown with reloads in MTM boxes. Nobody has ever had a problem with that. The SAPS guy couldn't multiply 5x10 so he had to count each one. He lost count every time and kept getting a...

Bringing trophies back as checked baggage

I did it from Canada to the US this year with a frozen skull & cape. It isn’t so difficult. You need two sets of documents. The most difficult would be the export paperwork. From Canada, your hunting permit is valid for this. From Namibia, you need a government issued export permit. How...

    First trip hunting Africa

.375 H&H is minimum, but certainly sufficient. There are plenty of other cartridges in this general class (junior medium-bores) that will work, including the 9.3x62 and the .375 Weatherby to name two. The next step up (senior medium-bores) would include the .404 Jeffery, the .416...

I've Always Wondered Could I Stop A T-Rex On Safari With My 416 Rem Mag or Any Rifle

A small to medium-sized T-rex and a big bull elephant weigh about the same. The brain probably weighed less than a pound compared to an elephant's 10 pounds or so. Hitting it would be pretty tricky. Then what? Shoulder mount? Flatskin? a full-body mount diorama of one eating a...
