Hunting (Primarily) With a Camera These Days...Anyone Else Do This?

I really enjoy trying to use a camera and sharing memories and encounters in nature. I have a humble little YouTube channel full of buffalo, Gouldian finches and heaps of other Australian creatures both native and non-native. It’s called Wild Nature Australia.

Can you reload a single shot fast enough for DG?

G’day Brian, Alex Jager (spelling?) is a member here and is definitely the best person to talk to, I don’t know him but he has an excellent reputation and I wholeheartedly recommend him. Plus his wife saved the life of our beautiful old dog once, so I am biased.

Can you reload a single shot fast enough for DG?

Got at least one buffalo with my Ruger No.1 in .300H&H; maybe a dozen buffalo and a few scrubbers with my Ruger No.1 in .450/400 3” NE; maybe half-a-dozen buffalo and two or three scrubbers with my CVA .54” percussion cap and roundball; and one buffalo with my .54” flintlock and roundball. Glad...

Mate, my copy of Ndlovu is in storage in Queensland! Hopefully middle of next year I’ll dig it out and send it down to you.

Actual calibers used for Buffalo by AH members

I tried to select all options except for problems. The only time problems arise is due to poor first shot placement.

Actual calibers used for Buffalo by AH members

Not usually, but it does happen. I’ve had to react quickly in self-defence a few times, in addition to shouting some down as well as having more time available in open country to shoot them inbound. In other words, sorting them out in the split second before they launch or as they commence...

    Blaser R8 for Dangerous Game

I commented back in 2022 as a new owner. Since then my R8 .375H&H has accounted for probably thirty or forty buffalo and scrub bulls, plus a few boars. I learned the hard way that you have to carefully follow the instructions with the QD mounts, removing them and reinstalling them in the...

What calibre would you choose for Buffalo and Bovine hunts

Gun shops in Darwin have factory ammo in .375H&H, .458WM, .458 Lott, .416 Rigby, .470NE and .500NE. But for hand loaders anything goes.

Solid bullets for Buffalo? Yes or No?

Softs only, you want that noticeably increased impact thump and the damage that goes with it instead of a mosquito bite zip-through. A solid makes a hole the same size, a soft can double the size of that hole. Modern softs hold together very well. Having used Woodleigh softs, solids, Hydros...

What calibre would you choose for Buffalo and Bovine hunts

Sounds like you’ve already got a good .375H&H, just use that. These days my preference is the 350 grain Woodleigh RNSN HD, but the 300 grain version works well as does the Hydro. Don’t overthink it or stress about it. I’ve seen .270s work as well with good bullets and heart shots, but...

    300 win solid?

Shot many buffalo with 180 grain Woodleigh Hydros; many with the same weight CEB Safari Solid; and a few with the 220 grain Woodleigh FMJ… but with a .300H&H, although I did load up a heap of 180 grain Hydros in .300WM for a Police Officer who put them to good use on buffalo.

    Woodleigh weldcore

Late to this thread but back when I used .416 Rigby extensively I only used the 410 grain Woodleigh RNSN. I simply used the recommended starting load, from memory. It was absolutely emphatic on dozens of buffalo, scrub bulls and camels, plus boars and donkeys. Never any issues and the bullets...

I need a companion rifle for the 500J

.300H&H: You can purchase factory ammunition or easily load your own; mine has killed over a hundred buffalo, so no problem with large plainsgame; they can reach-out (my best was a feral jack donkey at 395m resting on a tree).
